The Nebraska Coaches Association is having an all-star volleyball match tonight featuring future Huskers, Gina Mancuso and Hayley Thramer. Also competing will be UCLA's Lauren Cook and Wichita State's Chelsey Feekin, among several other future DI athletes. It will be televised on NETV Channel 12 at 7:00 pm and I think it will also be webcast at www.netnebraska.org/television/ if you are interested.

Some nice play from all of them. Quite a loaded All-star match on both sides.
Really liking Tramer and of course Mancuso.

Normally I think high school VB is rather painful to watch but this was pretty entertaining. I'm sure having nine of the players coming from the 18 club national championship Nebraska Juniors team with 8 of them going to DI had a lot to do with it. That Natalie Braun going to Furman was very impressive for a small player. Cook is a very nice setter, great hands, good attacker, and plays great floor defense.
Thramer did some good things but still needs some work to see much Husker floor time. I could see her redshirting to get a little more development time.
Mancuso was very good. I know this was not exactly college volleyball (although close with that many moving on to the next level) but she looks ready to play. I didn't see any great back court defensive plays but did play solid enough. She served well, had a couple of blocks and had something like 16 kills. She certainly will be a fun one to watch develop.
Nice to see John Cook there supporting both Lauren and his new Huskers and several current Huskers there for Hayley and Gina.

Very impressed. Gina Mancuso is much more advanced than I thought. She has a huge variety of shots and power. Cook.....simply amazing and kick a$$ defense. Thramer...needs work...lots of raw. Feekin ( spelling)...impressive also.
Never seen that much talent at an All-Star game before in Nebraska. Great to watch.

I was only able to see the web cast but at times I was impressed with the play from both teams while other times you could tell it was an all star match. Very impressed with Mancuso. She will certainly help the Husker program. Thramer looked good as well though she isn't as polished as Mancuso but that is expected since she comes from one of the smallest schools in Nebraska. I think Thramer has improved in her skills though after playing for Gwen during the club season.
It was nice to see 8 of these athletes going to D1 programs as well as several going to D11 schools.

Is this match archived on the website? I missed it but I would really like to see Mancuso and Cook play.

WOW! It's hard to believe Nebraska has so many talented young women, who JUST graduated from high school. As a huge Mancuso fan, it was great to see her show some of her stuff, even though I wish she could have taken about 75% of the swings. Cook was a machine, and several other players I hadn't seen too many times really made an impact. Furthermore, Natalie Braun will be an AMAZING addition to Furman. Honestly, I am kind of surprised a bigger school didn't snatch her, as she is very well rounded, although a little undersized. Thramer is pretty raw, but I can't wait to see where she is by her senior year. She looks a lot more athletic than Gates or Wilberger as freshmen, so Cook has a lot to work with. I was expecting Straube, who is heading to ISU, to be more dominant, but I shouldn't base her potential off one match. However, Cook was setting for her most of the time, like she did in club volleyball, so perhaps I was expecting a really great connection.

Thramer is a better blocker and server than Straube. Straube was more physical and aggressive. I did forget to mention Braun earlier who was a powerhouse on the outside.

If someone wants to evaluate or comment on each of the 8(?) players who will be D1 next year, it would be appreciated.

Here we go... 1. Mancuso- Nebraska- I don't have enough good things to say...Incredible hitter, both for power and finesse shots, great blocker, tough jump float serve, excellent passer, always communicating on the court, rallying her team to come together. 2. Cook- UCLA- simply outstanding, great hands, could make any hitter look good, tricky jump float serve, made some AMAZING digs in the All-Star game, including one off a hard hit shot by Mancuso, look for her to do some BIG things at UCLA. 3. Feekin- Witchita State- If not for Cook, could be the best setting prospect out of Nebraska since Lindsey Hunter(Missouri), VERY aggressive at the net, would probably be a top recruit if she played solely on the right side, solid serve, solid blocker at 6'1, Witchita State will definitely be proud. 4. Straube- Iowa State- Has great size at 6'3 and solid, tipped the ball a lot in the All Star game, which could have been due to sets too far or too close to the net, but I can't blame Cook, since she is too good. Straube could be a really nice player in a couple of years, very aggressive when she wants to be, and is an outstanding blocker. 5. Braun- Furman- Wow! If this girl was 5 inches taller, she could be the next Jordan Larson. Outstanding defensive player, consistenly wows me with her ability to make some crazy digs, hits a heavy, heavy ball, great leaper, solid blocker...Definitely the Offensive MVP for her All-Star team. 6. Thramer- Nebraska- Could develop into an All-American middle. Very athletic, good body control for a lanky 6'2 young lady, give her time and Nebraska could have a player similar to Jenny Kropp on their hands. She really wasn't given the opportunity to shine in the All-Star game, but did have a couple of nice plays, and her serve had the Blue Team struggling on serve receive. 7.Hubl?- Nebraska- Don't know much about her on the volleyball court, although she was a stand-out in soccer and basketball. Very athletic, could definitely be the next Schwartz. 8. Klingemann?- South Dakota State- Didn't do too much to impress me, except she had some finesse, even at 6'3. Am I right on the last two players? I know Hubl is walking on at NU, and Klingemann is going to South Dakota State. What about Stacie Hansen from Lincoln Southwest? She really impressed me, mixing up her shots in the All-Star game.

Thanks qc for the question about the 8 players and thanks nevballfan for the descriptive answer. All observations are welcome at this juncture.

nevballfan: Thanks for the reply. Do you know if the webcast will be available again? I was busy and missed it.
PS There are several wonderful HS senior volleyball players in Nebraska and I'm a bit of a fan. I think NU, UCLA, WSU, ISU, etc. are getting nice players.

I think it was hard to evaluate the effectiveness of the middles as blockers. The outside blockers were all over the place in setting up the block---given they only practiced together three days so I'm sure they didn't work blocking a lot or game plans for blocking other than try to close it. I just noticed the girls from the smaller schools seemed to never set the block up in the same place.

Now that....is a great setter. She was also the best defensive player on the court. Also knew exactly where the big blockers were on the opponents side at all times and where every hole was.
