47 SMU 48 Marquette 49 Pepperdine 50 Western Mich. 51 Ball St. 52 Georgia Tech 53 Michigan St. 55 Oregon 56 St. Louis 57 Milwaukee 58 Villanova 59 St. Mary's (CA) 60 Xavier 60 Northern Ill.
Any of these teams have a better case than others?
Although they do not have obvious cases, I really thought someone out of the following group would have gotten in -- SMU, Northern IL, Wis-Milwaukee.

There didn't seem to be as many glaring omissions (teams the fans or volleytalk thought should be in)!

I predicted MARQUETTE (as the top RKPI team NOT to get a bid), so I almost nailed it ... might as well toot my own horn!!
Georgia Tech has an interesting case, with nine what KERNs PABLO describes as good wins including 4-4 against top 25 teams, but almost as many (seven) bad losses so they were very inconsistent. And though they swept Miami for half of their Top 25 RKPI wins, they then were 1-4 in 26-50 and only 7-6 a very erratic versus 51-150. They really dont have a case BECAUSE DESPITE some high profile wins, they have an almost equal number of matches they just laid an egg in.

Michigan State was not eligible since they didn't have a winning record overall. If they won that five gamer against Hawaii early in the season it may have been a different story.

I thought Pepperdine was going to get in in place of one of the SEC teams (probably Auburn). But that is the only thing that surprised me (seeding was unsurprising, too)

It seems to me that most of the chatter on here isn't about who didn't get in, but where those that are in got seeded.
How many automatic bids were upsets that led to this? Just Hawaii-Utah State or were there any others?

StMary's (and Oregon) is good enough to upset half the 'seeded' teams. (RPI is an insufficient tool for truly ranking a teams comparative strength against other teams so mentioned rankings do not refer to RPI). Unfortunately their schedule included either top 15 caliber teams or teams outside the 'wow' range. Pepperdine and LBSU wer the only in between 15-50 teams and they were 2-1 against them. Loss to UOP to end season hurt but wasn't what kept them out.
Many teams can take a set off a top ten team from time to time. StMarys took sets off 4 of the 5 top15-level opponents they played.
Given the choice to play StMarys (or Oregon) in subRegional instead of playing the teams currently in their subRegional; of the seeded teams, and I'll bet you find very few willing to do so (maybe Hawaii, Texas, Minnesota, USC would be willing to swap)
