Two sets of rankings. The first is the set you will find at richkern.com whenever they get posted. The second is a different model, one that gave the best results for the tournament over the last 5 years. No HCA or time aspect to it. That's the difference.

Second model. This one gave the best results for the NCAA tournament over the last 5 years (although the difference between this and the one above is less than 1 match/season)

Stanford moves from #25 in the standard rankings to #11. Seems like a big swing, but I guess that's really only one match in the tournament. Exiting in the second round or the third.

Consolidating the top 16 from Pablo, Pablo 2, RKPI and AVCA: Rank | Pablo Full | "Pablo 2" | RKPI | AVCA (last week) | 1 | USC | Nebraska | Illinois | USC | 2 | Texas | USC | Texas | Nebraska | 3 | Penn State | UCLA | Iowa State | Hawai'i | 4 | Purdue | Purdue | Nebraska | UCLA | 5 | Nebraska | Illinois | Northern Iowa | Texas | 6 | Iowa State | Texas | Purdue | Stanford | 7 | Florida | Hawaii | Hawaii | Illinois | 8 | Hawaii | Penn State | USC | Purdue | 9 | Tennessee | Iowa State | Tennessee | Penn State | 10 | Illinois | Florida | Florida State | California | 11 | Pepperdine | Stanford | Penn State | Washington | 12 | Texas A&M | Pepperdine(tie) | Minnesota | Northern Iowa | 13 | UCLA | Washington (tie #12) | Kentucky | Oregon | 14 | Oregon | California | Northern Illinois | Iowa State | 15 | Northern Iowa | Northern Iowa | UCLA | Tennessee | 16 | Colorado State (tie) | Minnesota | Pepperdine | Kentucky | | Minnesota (tie) |
There, now we're ready to create better brackets than the selection comittee. VT, you have 6 hours; Go! Edit: ties mess things up, don't they?

Consolidating the top 16 from Pablo, Pablo 2, RKPI and AVCA... YOD: You did not account for the two ties, one each in the Pablo charts (#16 in the original and #12 in Pablo 2).

Any particular reason the NCAA couldn't use one of these databases? They are math models, right? No subjective rational? I agree with excluding the polls from consideration, as this season has shown, the polls are loony.
By the way, Bofa, thanks for putting the work in on Pablo. Hope your local sports book survived the recent poker troubles so you can cash in on your homework.

Any particular reason the NCAA couldn't use one of these databases? They are math models, right? No subjective rational? Could they? Sure. Will they? Don't count on it. Why not? Good question. Likely because they didn't come up with it. They figure RPI works for everything else so why should vball be any different?

There are no regional hosts within the HCA of Texas's rating, and they are well within the full HCA of the only team ahead of them, and we gotta think there's some fraction of HCA that would apply to a venue only an hour's drive away from Gregory.

Using the second model, here are the top Pablo teams to not get invited:
34 BYU 42 Northwestern 43 St Mary's 44 Wisconsin (not eligible) 45 Kansas 46 LSU
Here are the worst at-large teams according to Pablo: 48 Western Michigan 49 Marquette 54 Missouri 55 Baylor 57 Ball State 58 Middle Tennessee

Okay, my last post went into the cloud...
The final four according to 2nd pablo and adding in 215 HCA when applicable: UCLA narrowly over Texas Purdue over Iowa State Illinois over Stanford Nebraska over Hawaii -- a total of 5 pablo points. About the equivalent of 33-31 in set 5. That might be the most viewed volleytalk match thread in history.

Can't find Yale in all of this. Not in the top 100?

Here are the 11/28 numbers for tournament teams with Pablo rankings >100:
105 Yale 112 Lipscomb 114 Morehead State 130 Sacred Heart 147 American 152 Niagara 169 Liberty 216 Jackson State 222 Maryland Eastern Shore
It seems to me that there are fewer teams in the field this year with really high RPI/Pablo rankings. Is that true?
