ANAHEIM, Calif. (April 28, 2009) – Listening to Reid Priddy and Kevin Barnett talk volleyball on their new internet radio show, The NET LIVE, is like getting to join them for a couple drinks after a match.
Priddy, a two-time Olympian (2004 and ’08) who struck gold with the men’s team in Beijing, gives updates from Siberia where he plays for Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and behind-the-scenes looks at what it is like to be a member of the U.S. Men's National Team.
Barnett, a two-time Olympian (2000 and ’04) who served as one of NBC’s commentators in Beijing, proves he has been keeping up with all things volleyball, from the AVP to the U.S. national teams to the college game.
They have also interviewed some of the top names in volleyball including Karch Kiraly, Misty May-Treanor, Hugh McCutcheon and John Speraw among others.
Now, what Barnett and Priddy would like is for more volleyball fans to join them at the table.
“From the people that talk to us, the reaction has been good,” Barnett said.
Both men say the show is a work in progress. With Barnett working from Southern California in between other jobs and fatherly duties and Priddy calling from Siberia, usually in the middle of the night, it can be tough to get a show together. And the two are also still getting used to the technology.
The shows are archived to the web site, so those who can’t listen to it live can listen to it later. But they miss out on the chance to call the show or use the live chat feature to comment on the show as it is going on.
Barnett hopes getting the word out in the volleyball community will increase listener numbers and get fans to get involved.
“There isn’t a competing product and certainly there is a community that is interested,” he said. “It’s just a matter of getting the word out.”
Barnett and Priddy came up with the idea for the show while Priddy was in Southern California for the Christmas holiday. Why did they want to do the show?
“Lots of reasons,” writes Priddy on his iPhone from Russia. “One, after doing radio interviews as a guest and listening to podcasts daily, it seemed like a lot of fun to host and produce a show.
“Also, we recognize big gaps in how we tell the volleyball story to America. Word is NOT getting out. So with technology advancing this was a fun and relatively easy solution to get the ball rolling.”
Barnett adds, “Interviewing is something I want to get better at; listening to the answers and following up. This is a great opportunity for me to refine those skills. Just like volleyball, it’s all about repetition.”
