MALIBU, Calif. - Former Pepperdine All-American setter J.J. Riley has returned to Malibu as an assistant coach with the men's volleyball team, head coach Marv Dunphy announced today.
"J.J. got it as a player and he gets it as a coach," Dunphy said. "He will have a significant role with our setters and our offense, although he has the expertise to teach any aspect of the game. As a player he was tough and he was sound in all parts of the game."
Riley was part of the Waves' team as a student-athlete for five seasons (1995-99) and was a Volleyball Magazine All-American second team selection in 1998, when Pepperdine reached the title match at the NCAA Championships. The Waves won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title in 1998 with Riley setting.
He set the Pepperdine record for career assists with 3,788 and now stands third on that list. During the sideout scoring era, he had the third and fourth-highest single-season assist totals in school history (1,634 in 1999 and 1,406 in 1998). His total of 18.78 assists per game in the 1999 season is the second-best figure in Pepperdine history.
After graduating from Pepperdine in 1999 with a degree in physical education, he was an assistant coach with the men under Jeff Stork for the 2000 season, then was an assistant with Nina Matthies and the women's team for three years (2001-03). The women's program had its best-ever result in 2002 by reaching a regional final in the NCAA Tournament.
Most recently, Riley lived in Bend, Ore., where he ran a personal training business called Central Oregon Plyometrics for adults and elite athletes. He also founded a non-profit volleyball club, Oregon Volleyball Academy, where he directed 16 teams and was head coach of the 18-1 team.
He served as the varsity girls' head coach at Summit High School in Bend for three years, which included the school's first-ever state tournament appearance and a sixth-place finish in 2006. He has also coached with the Oregon Suns and Sports Shack club programs.
In addition to his coaching background, he is an NESTA certified strength and conditioning coach and is SAQ (strength, agility, quickness) certified.
A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, he graduated from Punahou High School in 1994. He was an all-state volleyball player and helped Punahou to two state championships. He won gold, silver and bronze medals at Junior Olympics.
He is married to former Pepperdine women's volleyball player Emily (Rothman) Riley, who is a 2002 graduate.
