I think that's a fantastic hire for Pacific. Big loss for Hawaii. Wonder who Dave will go after to fill Charlie's shoes? Congrats to Charlie, best of luck.

UH's Wade named volleyball coach at Pacific
Advertiser Staff
Charlie Wade, University of Hawai'i women's volleyball associate head coach, was named women's head coach at University of the Pacific, the school announced today. Wade replaces Jayne McHugh, who accepted reassignment within the UOP athletic department on Nov. 30.
"Becoming the head coach at University of the Pacific is a great opportunity for me both personally and professionally," Wade said in a prepared statement. "I am excited to have the responsibility of leading one of the elite programs in women's collegiate volleyball."
Wade, 42, has been an assistant on UH coach Dave Shoji's staff for 11 years, the last six as associate head coach. As Shoji's top assistant, Wade has been considered for several head coaching jobs in the past, including the University of Washington. Last year, Wade turned down the Fresno State women's volleyball head coaching position.
Wade filled in as UH interim coach in 2004 and went 3-0 when Shoji attended to a family matter.
Wade is UH's primary recruiter, and also breaks down film, produces scouting reports and provides technical training during practices.
Wade is married, and has one son.

Now the recruit is on for an Associate Head coach. Congrats to Charlie. I've actually been following Wahine volleyball from the time he got hired.

Good luck Charlie! You will be missed.
I really believed he would stick around until Dave retired. I hope we see him back in a few years. Any chance some players may follow him to Pacific? He may be the reason some players decided to come here. He is the primary recruiter.
I wonder who will replace him. I don't think Kari is ready. They need someone who has recruiting experience and someone who brings a fresh, new perspective to the system.

A few quick notes...
1. Congrats Charlie (it's about time they made this announcement official)!
2. This position now moves 'to the top of the leader board' in terms of coveted and available coaching jobs (Note: the top spot was previously held by Florida when Arlisa left).
3. Sit back, relax and enjoy watching how 'The Coaching Carousel' turns now that Florida and Hawaii are both hiring.

I'm disappointed for the Hawaii program, but elated for Charlie. I have no doubt that under him, the Pacific program will rise once again. Athletics is unlike any other profession. There is always change. It is rare today that a person will stay in one place for their entire career. Gone are the days of Shoji and Banachokowski and Rose as there is so much more competition and pressure to perform immediately and often. It's hard to find a school that will turn their top notch program over to a 27 year old, and let them have a 30 year head coaching career. Good luck at Pacific, Charlie. Good luck to Dave in finding another gem of an assistant coach.

Pg... your thoughts?
I think this is really great for Pacific. After the ’06, I may have to come see some Tiger matches in the Spanos Center… I may even need one of those orange cowboy hats!
Congratulations to Charlie Wade and Pacific!

There goes all of UH's recruiting efforts. Shoji is definetely not a go-getter when it comes to recruiting. All you UH faithful better hope he hires an aggressive recruiter who is plugged into the club scene or else UH will fall off the map like they did in the early 90's before Wade showed up and started getting the Wahine some recruits.
To all you UOP fans, better makes sure the ventilation system in the gym is tuned up.

I'm sure no one realizes this more than Shoji and he will work hard to hire a coach with all the club connections and can be an agressive recruiter. I'm sure there are a lot of well qualified coaches who would love to come to Hawaii, I don't think they will have any problem finding applicants for the job.
Good for Charlie that he has his chance to prove himself as a head coach before possibly coming back after Dave retires. Jayne McHugh was associate head coach under Dunning but never had any head coaching experience before being hired and we all saw how well that worked out.

I am so happy and sad at the same time. As a Tiger, I am ecstatic, but being from Hawaii, I am disheartened. I really think that Charlie will be able to bring us back into the top 25, I am not sure if he can do it within this first year as our recruits are not as strong as they used to be and a lot of our starters are either gone or transferred. I think it will be interesting. I think once Charlie can get his own recruits in and his own style in place, we can expect results within 1-2 years. I do expect us to come in at least 3rd place this coming season in the Big West with Charlie at the driver's seat and hopefully back to the champions before long. As for a NCAA title, I am not sure if we will ever attract the big names like Stanford or PSU to be in title contention, but I can always hope for UH and Pacific. Go Bows!!! Go Tigers!!!

| In many respects I have always looked at Hawaii in the same light that I look at Stanford when it comes to recruiting. Tell me people, how tough can it be to try to "lure" some kid to come to Hawaii and play volleyball for 4 years? Let's face it, 90% of the coaches in America have a tougher sell for their respective Universities than Dave Shoji has. I also chuckle at those comments about Charlie waiting until Dave retires.....retire? He will die in that position, not going anywhere and not retiring in all probability until his health forces him to and he looks pretty damned healthy to me!!! Charlie made a good decision for him, and it is a good hire for UOP and for the Big West! Congrats UOP we need your program back in the top 10!

I knew Hawai'i wouldn't be able to hold on to Charlie forever. Congrats to him, it's about time he gets to sail his own ship. Big loss for the Wahine program as we Hawai'i fans know how hard he's worked as a recruiter and a coach.
Congrats to the Tiger program, they are bringing in someone who can put them back on the map.
