Arizona volleyball star accepts NU offer
BY TODD HENRICHS / Lincoln Journal Star

Tara Mueller attended volleyball camp at Nebraska last summer. Then this fall, the Scottsdale, Ariz., native twice traveled to the Cornhusker State to watch NU play on separate weekends at the Coliseum and at Qwest Center Omaha.

“I absolutely loved it,” Mueller said. “I loved everything about it.”

But it wasn’t until Mueller saw head coach John Cook and assistant Lee Maes standing alongside the court at a weekend club tournament near Phoenix that she knew for certain that she wanted to play for Nebraska.

“I was narrowing everything down — all the recruiting stuff — and after I saw him (Cook) and Lee, it totally hit me,” Mueller said. “I don’t know why it took so long.”

The 6-foot-2 Mueller, the Gatorade Player of the Year in Arizona in the fall, phoned Cook on Wednesday to accept a scholarship offer. A junior at state champion Desert Mountain High School, Mueller joins Denver area star Lindsey Licht as members of the Huskers’ 2007 recruiting class.

Mueller chose Nebraska after considering a number of schools, among them Arizona, Arizona State and Texas.

Mueller said Maes played an integral part in her decision to first consider the Huskers. Maes was one of Mueller’s coaches in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program in 2003. His move from California to Nebraska last year prompted Mueller to sign up for a volleyball camp at NU last summer.

Watching her first Nebraska match at the Coliseum “was insane,” said Mueller, who returned in December to watch the Huskers play in front of record crowds of nearly 15,000 for the regional.

Despite being a lifelong Arizona resident, Mueller does have a Midwest background. Her parents are Missouri natives and the family often spends time during the summer at Table Rock Lake near Branson.

Mueller will likely play as an outside hitter at Nebraska.

I know it's probably early to make real comparisons.

But as a guess, would anybody care to say something about how she might stack up against other elite players

Heard Mueller was arguably the next best outside hitter prospect in the class of 07 right behind Alix Klineman. Recruited by both Arizona schools, Texas, UCLA, and USC among the top collegiate programs. Tawa on prepvolleyball has her ranked as one of top 50 junior prospects in the nation. Here is what The Arizona Republic says about here in their All-Arizona Girls Volleyball Team article:

"May graduate as Arizona's all-time best product."

She is a Junior and Whitney Dosty (also on the team) is a Senior and ranked #4 by PrepVolleyball.com. This should indicate she has some serious potential. Not that I would complain about having Dosty on the Huskers' team ALSO .... are you reading this Whitney :D
