DIII should get moving later in the year. They are a little easier to maintain and the amount of money saved by keeping the position open is more significant to a DIII school. The schools that move early are generally well to do, or the programs have significant challenges in front of them...like Birmingham Southern last year, with only 3-4 returning players, so they had to hire in January. Also, a lot of the full time DIII's are contracted through the end of the school year, meaning a coach could collect a paycheck without doing to much work, so if you are going to retire, you wait until its golfing weather.... so give it until Easter and things will start to pick up for DIII's. See? Right on cue...

vnnerd's note about DIIIs saving money may also explain Hamline's hire. Why hire an older proven coach when a younger one can be $5 - 10,000 less expensive?

Who else was in the running at James Madison? Still a little surprised with the hiring of Sauer. I think she'll have her day, but think she may still be a little young to tackle this job. Time will tell. Good luck to her and the Dukies. I don't disagree, but Lauren has been highly succesful at every thing she has done. Those people usually find a way to be succesful regardless of experience, age, etc.... Top student, top player, top assistant, hard to see her failing. It is going to be a tough road for a few years at JMU,I thought they would go with an experienced coach at this time, tough group of parents amd players .

But it is telling that JMU would pass up a candidate with MANY more years experience, including some as a head coach, to go with someone whose first job was Kentucky.

Lassie,
I don't know Lauren Sauer but I'm going to guess that her reference list for this job looks something like this Kathy DeBoer - Former University of Kentucky Head Coach and the Executive of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, who Lauren serves on several committees with and for. Shelton Collier - USA Junior National Team, who recruited Sauer to Ga Tech, and coached her for a couple years Chris Beerman - Assistant WITH Lauren at Kentucky, and the most successful coach JMU has had in memory And Craig Skinner - who, from JMU's perspective may be the least impressive name on the list, but he's her boss, so you have to put him on the list, and building a sweet 16 program should give him some credability, especially if he says they wouldn't have done it without Lauren.
And whatever we think of 30 under 30 in here, to administrators, that sounds like a big thing.
I agree, that they should give a good look at anyone with winning DI Head Coaching experience (and I'm not sure who you are talking about), but I don't think JMU is thinking they got a lightweight. If I went through the process to hire a baseball coach, and they had similar credentials, I would think I was getting a rising star.
And JMU will get better. Now, is JMU going to be Wichita State/Ohio good? Albany/American good? or just Jacksonville St/Davidson good? Nobody knows, but I haven't heard anyone say this is a BAD hire and I'm not sure anyone could.

Glieber had one winning season in 5 she was at Carroll. True, but at least she's BEEN a head coach.

As is the case with a number of the recent hires, it came down to money, plain and simple. Especially at Houston, which honestly, is much more puzzling than the JMU hire. The players at JMU seem to have had quite a say in the matter, which spells difficulty for Lauren. Houston, again, is odd. Especially with who they had on their short list. Asst from lower tier SEC team costs much less than experienced Head Coach from OVC or Southland Conference.

Looks like Eastern Illinois is going to make it simple on themselves and promote female assistant to head coaching position. The next sound you hear will be Mango shouting "HOORAY!!"
