April 6, 2009
The ninth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team concludes its four-match home stand this week against a pair of traditional rivals in Pepperdine and USC.
The Bruins will host the Waves (18-2, 16-2) on Wed., Apr. 8 and the Trojans (16-7, 12-6) on Fri., Apr. 10. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
The Pepperdine match will be televised on FSN/Prime Ticket for broadcast on Apr. 9 at 8 p.m. The USC match marks the 32nd Annual Kilgour Cup and UCLA's annual Senior Night celebration.
In addition, Darren Preston and Jade Machado will call the action for both matches on UCLABruins.com.
Promotions for the Pepperdine match include free UCLA Volleyball tank tops for the first 250 fans and a buy-one-get-one ticket free incentive for the Apr. 10 USC match. At the USC match, the first 100 UCLA students will receive a free slice of Domino's pizza.
Last weekend, the Bruins (12-13, 8-10) won their league series with visiting No. 13 Hawai'i. On Apr. 2, the Bruins won in five games, led by 17 kills from freshman Thomas Amberg and 16 from opposite Jack Polales. On Apr. 3, the Bruins won in four games, sparked by the inspired play of junior Garrett Muagututia who led both teams with 20 kills and 23.0 points.
Pepperdine last week won road matches against CS Northridge (3-2) and UC Santa Barbara (3-0). Senior All-American Paul Carroll hammered 53 kills for the series, including 32 in 60 swings against CS Northridge. For the season, Carroll leads the MPSF in kills per match (6.05) and points per game (6.94).
USC split a pair of road matches last week, winning at UCSB (3-2) and falling at CS Northridge (1-3). Sophomore Murphy Troy led the Trojans with 44 kills, including 25 in the setback against the Matadors. Troy leads USC in kills (4.83) and points (5.51).
The Bruins lost to both the Waves and Trojans earlier this season. On Feb. 18 Pepperdine swept UCLA, 3-0 at Firestone Fieldhouse. Carroll led Pepperdine with 19 kills (.357) and 20.0 points. The Waves have won two straight against the Bruins, but trail in the series, 73-30.
Two nights later, the Bruins fell in four on the road to USC, where freshman Tony Ciarelli led the hosts with 15 kills (.387). It was the Trojans' third consecutive victory against the Bruins, although they trail in the series, 85-34.
For the first time, proceeds from the Kilgour Cup will be donated to former UCLA volleyball letterman Andy Klussmann, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident four years ago that claimed the life of his wife Janna.
