Men's Volleyball:
Sitting Down With Men's Volleyball Player Jon Steller
May 12, 2009
Steller is a senior on the men's volleyball team that won its second NCAA Championship in the last three years. Steller was also named UCI's Lauds & Laurels Outstanding Student-Athlete.
First of all, congratulations on your recent acceptance to the UCI medical school. What are you looking forward to in your next step of education?
I'm very excited and optimistic for this next step. UCI was my number one choice among schools. I know people who go into med school with a focus on one thing (radiology, cardiology, etc.) and end up doing something else. So, I want to go in with an open mind and see where it all takes me.
I understand you have done a lot of volunteer work in other countries. Where did you enjoy serving the most? What places would you like to visit in the future?
I really enjoyed working in Cerrito de Rojas, Mexico. Myself and others were able to conduct walk-in treatment for patients and do things like fit them for glasses and test blood/glucose levels for diabetes. I also really liked going to the Ukraine, where there are a lot of orphans and children on the streets. I was able to help treat many kids who suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome and other illnesses. It was also fun to take some of the kids to McDonalds or to organize a soccer game with them. Serving others is great because we are able to lean something about ourselves.
There are many places that I would like to visit in the future. Someday I would like to get a group together of other doctors, dentists, and physical therapists, and serve together in another country. I would like to go back to Mexico or Guatemala and improve my Spanish-speaking ability as well.
Being an All-American player, a service specialist, and role player, has it been difficult to adjust to different roles for the team?
It has been a physical and mental battle since I was a freshman. There have been ups and downs with injuries and other obstacles to get where I am today. In the end, it's all about the team. I always just wanted to help anyway I could to make us the best team possible.
Do you want to continue playing volleyball after UCI?
It would be great to continue playing the sport that I love, but I have also come to realize that there are other great things in my life. Right now I am focused on my career, my family, and med school. But I haven't ruled anything out, maybe somewhere down the line I will play again.
What has been your proudest moment or achievement during your time at UCI?
I am not a big awards guy, but it was nice to earn the All-America honors last year. But my proudest moment must be last week when I got the phone call from the Dean telling me my admittance into UCI's med school. I am also considering the M.D. /MBA Program at UCI because I would like to open my own non-profit business someday. To see all the years of hard work pay off was like seeing my dreams come true. I think I still haven't realized it all yet.
