[clarification -- he's moving over to the women's game] San Francisco: Scott Wong will join the USF volleyball coaching staff as the associate head coach. A current USA men's volleyball assistant coach and former National Team member, Wong has spent the past two seasons with the third-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team as an assistant coach. Hmmmm ...very interesting scenario has played out here. Scott applied for the Hawaii head coaching position. Wade got the job and took USF women's associate head coach Dan Fisher and made him associate head coach at UH. Now Scott has replaced the person(Fisher) who will work for the guy who beat him out for the head coaching job(Wade). It would have been simplier if they would have just hired Wong to be associate head coach at UH.
Congratulation to Scott. He will be a great head coach some day. Shoji praised him on his volleyball IQ when he spent one year as a volunteer coach for the UH women's team a few years back.

Hey, you guys ever seen a nine-man match live? There's so many guys running around and jumping all over the place, fakes left and right, no blocking over, 5-man blocks, diggers all over the place.
Geez, there's so much going on the court that it damn near looks like a Chinese Fire Drill.
Oh...uh....wait....

9 man will be held in LA Chinatown this September. Kevin Wong, Mason Kuo and Kimo Tuyay were on the same team last year in New York City. They lost in the semi-final. There are some legendary Chinese players who have played in the past.
I heard there was one player who played for USC years ago who I believe led them to the National Championship (Son of BB would probably know about him), who is considered the Greatest Chinese Player to play in the tournament.
Three years ago Kevin, Scotty and Kimo were on the same team when thye won the Championship. Its a Big Thing within the Chinese Community. There are some amazing back row players in this tournament.
Remember they are playing on concrete and blacktop surfaces. If you have a chance check it out Labor Day weekend in LA. Kevin and Kimo and I believe Mason will again be playing together on the team.
I believe you are allowed 3 Asian players: I guess Kevin (Chinese Hawaiian) and Kimo (Filipino) are on the team. NO HAOLES.

Probably talking about Jen-Kai Liu.
Did you mean 3-non Asian players? Because if you can only have 3 asian players, and no caucasians, what are the other 6 guys gonna be? Samoan?

it's actually 3 non-full chinese players. you're allowed at most 3 non-full chinese players. however, they have to be at least of partial asian decent (to what partiality i do not know). therefore, the wong brothers, and kimo tuyay would have to be on a team with 6 other full chinese players to make a legitimate 9man team during the labor day tournament.
which means, full blooded players from any country other than the asian countries (9man rule book spells out which countries count as an asian country) are not eligible to play.
there is also a women's tournament during the labor day weekend in conjunction with the men, but the women play regular 6's with regular fivb international rules. women's teams are allowed 2 non-full blooded chinese players.
some men's players of note from past years have been
scott wong kevin wong stuart chong kimo tuyay mike lambert donald chen simon chen-brawley (sp?) justin schnor paul lotman

Paul Lotman? really? part what?
I wonder if they verify these things for the official 9-man events. I know these rules don't apply at local events.
Yeah when I heard Lambo played I was really surprised. I was even more surprised when I heard they lost to that team from Canada. I think their name was CalTex? I heard they had a guy who used to play on the Canadian National Team as well.

paul lotman is part indonesian. i believe a quarter.
the team from canada is connex. they won 10 years consecutively, lost in 2006 & 2007, and won again last year. jeff chung is their rightside who used to be on the canadian national team. what makes them good is not that chung is any more dominant than any of the above mentioned players, but that he is a great leader and his team plays like a machine.

West Coast needs some better backrow players than they had in NYC otherwise Connex is going beat them again. You better have Kevin Wong for more than one day.
Connex is more focused. You can see the passion in their eyes.
Plus West Coast is the team you "love it hated", flying in ringers from Hawaii and Canada.
It going to be a great tournament. West Coast has Hotter Asian Wahines.

Shoot, if I were a 9-man team, I'd be trying to figure out how to recruit Clay Stanley. No blocking over? He would break alot of fingers in this tournament, and none of them would be his.
