Exciting match to be at last night. Some big swings, big blocks, great digs, solid passing and long rallies...this match had it all....maybe not all the time but it was a great match for both teams as I think they can say that they learned something about themselves. There is another post that says that there is no excitment in the men's game...I completely disagree. These guys showed a lot of emotion...it was a fun match.

UC IRVINE DEFEATS CAL BAPTIST (boxscore)
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine outside hitters Jason Jablonsky and Matt Webber topped all players with 22 kills apiece, leading UCI past Cal Baptist 30-28, 23-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-12 Tuesday in a non-conference match at Crawford Court. With the win, UCI opens the season at 1-0 while the Cal Baptist falls to 0-1.
UCI middle blocker Aaron Harrell connected on 13 of 16 attempts with just one error to record a match-high .750 hitting percentage. Setter Brian Thornton totaled 70 assists while libero Brent Asuka led all players with nine digs. Webber led the team with seven block assists while middle blocker David Smith and Harrell each totaled four block assists.
Cal Baptist was led by opposite Shamsu Awudu, who put away 21 kills and totaled seven blocks on six block assists and solo block. Outside hitters Corey Spence and Seidu Ajanako added 17 and 15 kills, respectively, and Ajanako totaled a team-high eight digs. Setter Eric Plunkett handed out 51 assists while middle blockers Romain Vetter and Urs Gunthor led the Lancers to a 17 – 10.5 block advantage with seven block assists apiece.
UCI competes in the Elephant Bar Tournament, hosted by UC Santa Barbara, this Friday and Saturday (Jan. 6-7).
