 Kim Dropping Out...Going to Club
« Thread Started on Sept 22, 2006, 9:29am »

I found this on the Volleyball Magazine forum. Can any of the Pepp followers confirm this? (It makes sense based on his playing time but could just be a rumor)

Incredable that this Illinois legend is not given the chance to show what he can do. Some guys are practice players that can bang a ball at the 1 ft line...some guys are gamers. He never did practice well. This guy is the ultimate gamer. What is wrong with the coaching staff at Pepperdine?

Put him in a real game....and let him show the vb world just how good he is.

i woulndn't criticize the pepp coaches. marv is one of the best in the business. most coaches would have to agree that if a player doesn't do well in practice, he usually doesn't do great in the games. it could be possible that he was a great h.s. player, but just not cut out for pepp's team. its tough to get playing time at that level of competition. i'm sure that most of the pepp bench players could start at lower level d-1 schools, but thats what they knew they were getting themselves into be going to such a powerhouse. its too bad he quit, but good luck to him.

Talented as he is (and he is very talented), he was 6'0" coming out of high school. While he can jump out of the gym, he can't overcome the fundamental issue of his height.

It's too bad if this news is true - he's a great guy from what I know, and I'd hate to see him fail to achieve what he wanted.

Height shouldn't have been a factor unless he was told he had a shot at OH. With the trees they get at Pepp prolly wasn't the best idea, but can't fault the guy for trying. I'd seriously doubt it if he stayed at Pepp to play club, my guess would be a transfer back to the midwest to beef up one of those club squads. Yet again, Malibu vs MidW...never know

I will have to go look, but I do not recall Pepperdine even having a club team.
But there are about 350 of them and a couple hundred show up at Nationals, so I just may have overlooked them....
If I find they have one, I will update on here...

update: no mention of a Pepperdine men's club team in last year's NIRSA program, at any level....1,2,3

two more places to check, but I have been involved with men's club for about 17years and never recall a Pepperdine club team.

He is likely a good 6'0" libero, who could be of use to any number of club teams. Pepp roster shows him as a junior this fall, so he has 3 more years he can play club....unless he redshirted a year.

Don't see too many Asian guys in D1.

Obviously never got to see him play, how high is his vertical? I had no idea he was an "Illinois legend". Is he a really smart hitter or big banger or both? Cannon of an arm?

Kim is #2 for career kills in Illinois, just ahead of Kevin Deeke (1st team all-american for Illinois' club team last year as a freshman) and Sean Rooney (we've heard of him!), and behind Sean O'Malley (went to UCLA last year). I seem to recall that Kim had a 40" vert, or more. He has a powerful swing and knows the game well.

And I haven't seen Pepperdine at club nationals.

I remember a volleyballmag article about him and I think he knew he was going to be making the switch to Libero at Pepp. Did he travel with the team overseas in the summer?

Any Pepp followers know if Schleppenbach was used mostly as a Libero or DS? If so maybe Sam saw the writing on the wall and saw it was time to move on.

Kim was also the #1 hitter for the Adversity team that Hulce from Pepp and Peckler from BSU were on a few years ago. A very good team that was handicapped by injuries to Hulce, Peckler, Adams and Kim at JO's.

When Sam went to Pepp it was my understanding that he was going to switched to libero.

When Kim was being recruited it was very important for him to be allowed the chance to compete for an OH position. He said the coaching staffs at almost every school told him he couldn't be a hitter in college. Pepp's staff however told him he could compete to be an OH. In my opinion he could have hit at almost every single one of the schools that told him he couldn't and pretty much the only one that told him he could (Pepp) he never would be able too.

In HS Kim was a great player. Astounding knowledge of the game and smart hitter. Just as effective from backrow as front. Could bring heat, but equally able to tool and hit shots as requried against the big boys. And by far one of the best passers in the state. Wish he could have a college career worth writing home about.

I love you guys who think you know more than Marv Dunphy.

Why aren't you also complaining about Scates at UCLA? O'Malley is ahead of Kim in the Illinois high school records, according to an earlier post, and he got beat out at OH during the last season. And O'Malley is 6'9". Must be another dumb coach, eh?

I haven't seen Kim, but it's almost impossible for a 6'0" OH to play at a top DI school. That's just reality.

My son played at a top DI school a few years back. He's 6'0". He became a really good DS, and got to play after two years of making the transition.

The one game in his career (as a fifth year senior) in which he got to hit was against Cal State San Bernardino, a team that had players closer to his height. He hit really well, and afterwards all his teammates were going, wow, we didn't know you could hit that well.

But, early in his career, he also told me, after some experiences trying to hit against his teammates in practice, that he understood why he could not be a hitter at that level at 6'0".

That's just the way it is.

The funny thing is that he ended up at Pepperdine. Pepperdine is a program that relies on the height of their hitters. They are known for being a huge team that puts up a huge block. Unless a 6 foot tall hitter could block like a 6'10 player, his chances of starting at Pepperdine seem very limited. Hawaii has been known to have shorter outsides based on their style of play, but Pepperdine isn't known for their short outside hitters.
