I have heard many people say it is too painful to watch women's basketball, due to various reasons. Do many male volleyball fans feel the same way? I believe it's 38skynyrd that has made his feelings clear, (I apologize if my memory is faulty, incipient Alzheimer's). I personally think the slide play is pretty neat, although condemned as a chick play. Never really understood that. I do agree that there are too many tips and dinks off of "poor" sets in womans ball.

I like both for different reasons. Women's involve more strategy and I like the play calling like double slides or double quicks. I think the fundamentals are also a bit better as men's volleyball has the mentality of hitting the ball as hard as they can to try to get the kill without thinking through the rally.
However, after watching men's volleyball, women's volleyball is painfully slow. Watching the speed and rallies in the men's game gets really exciting.

I find men's volleyball somewhat more tedious to watch because there aren't enough rallies. Pass, set, boom, play over. When there are rallies, it's much more fun.

I totally agree with roy! I enjoy the finesse of the women's game but I love the speed and power of the men's game. I also love watching the men's game for those OMG moments ... you know what I'm talking about.

Want a better comparison? Raise the net up 6 inches or more and watch all those OMG moments disappear. The mens game needs this re adjustment. The players have evolved and passed the original purpose for the sport =VOLLEY. We have changed the scoring..the player substitutions..the net serve..the stupid LIBERO defensive specialist rule....IT used to be defense was required from everybody. When a big dominating player went back row and he couldn't play defense he was picked on...Tired him out..made him less an offensive threat.
Cant pass or play defense...6'10' doesn't matter now. Just put them on the net...Wonder why Stilt didn't fare well in his VB days? I was there and I saw....No back row help at all.
So its a big serve ..a set and a big swing..either a point or block..boring.

Yup, really gets your estrogen pumping huh?
After watching the speed of the men's game, women's volleyball looks like it's being played underwater.
Heck, in the time it takes a typical women's leftside set to get out to the hitter from the setter's hands, I can each some nachos, take a sip of my soda, and clean out some belly button lint.

The net height for the men is perfect. The players have adapted on both the offensive and defensive side to equalize it. I'd rather have the attacker going against an individual than a net. I started as a vb fan watching the women and in those days also commented that the men's game was too fast. And who can complain about the view. But after years of watching the men, it's become painful to watch the women. Long rallies now are simply the inability to score to me. Appreciating the men's game is like learning to appreciate a fine wine or micro brew. There's nothing like the physicality of a great men's match where it's like two heavy weights in the ring, and where there are real athletes flying in from the back row on an attack from a well set ball... only to have it dug up from a libero. When the men have a rally they're usually pretty good with bodies flying all over the place.

Why is the slide considered a woman's skill?

I guess a better question would be, why don't men's teams run the slide? I was teaching my JV boys high school team the slide the other day, and they were killing the ball, but I rarely, if ever, see college teams run it, or even other boys club teams.

I think high level Women's is fun to watch for the defense and rallies (ie natl champ game), but once you drop down to the lower levels, even mid-level college teams, it gets pretty ugly pretty fast. I think men's volleyball becomes watchable at a much lower skill level (ie, HS boys is at least a little bit interesting and NIRSA is high enough skill that it creates a really good mix of power and rallies)
With regards to the slide: I play for a NIRSA club college team, so kind of the middle ground between real college and HS. Against average teams, slides work decently well, but against better teams, from what I've seen slides don't work very well based on the block. A good outside blocker and average middle blocker working together can pretty much shut down a slide because the slide by definition takes away more then 1/3rd of the court (the hard cut back to the left) and tends to trap most hitters.

The big misnomer that everyone buys into is that "Women play better defense than men do in volleyball". That's a bunch of crap. The longer rallies produced in the women's game is not because of better defensive play, but because of the lack of terminating capability of hitters in the women's game.
