Naranjito Dynasty... CHAMPIONES
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Jose Ayala Gordián / Primera Hora

BAYAMON It took a match more than they had thought, but last night the Changos of Naranjito were proclaimed CHAMPIONS of the Senior Men's Volleyball League (LVSM) by beating the Caribs of San Sebastian in consecutive games, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19.

Naranjito, who won the final national round, 4-1, won its fifth scepter in a row and the 23rd in the history of the franchise, the most winning team in the history of LVSM.

Omar Rivera, Rookie of the Year, led the dominant demonstration of the Changos with 14 points, two of them in blocks. He was followed by Luis Feņito "Rodriguez with 13 points and Robert Tarr with 12 goals. Steve Klosterman, who was elected the Most Valuable Player of the final, contributed seven points, and sparked a number of advances in the Changos.

Naranjito was the more aggressive team in the first part and thanks to an early advance 3-0, took off on the Caribs, 5-2. San Sebastian used Eduardo Stawinsky of sweeper, who arrived on Tuesday night emergency to replace sick Saul Morales, and moved to Alvin Lamb objected to the injury of Jose "El Diablo" Alvarado. Omar Rivera also played the middle to increase the advantage of the Changos to 20-17, and despite the effort of Yosleyder Cala, Naranjito took the first game, 25-20.

However, San Sebastian was not prepared for the fury offensive by Robert Tarr and Erick Haddock, who penetrated the defense in front of the net with impunity to take off their Changos to 11-5. After a time out by the Caribs, Naranjito took off on a 6-0 rally that killed any hopes that the Caribs had.

The Changos completed its domination with good blocking and defense to win the second game on a beaten path of 25-14.

After the pitch suffered in the second game, the Caribs tried to regroup and, for a time, and worked at taking advantage at 7-4. But Rodriguez, Klosterman and Tarr had other plans and, after tying their last chance to 10-10, and attack ace of Rodriguez, coupled with Angel Ruiz's offense, put command into the hands of the Changos, taking off 13-10.

Then Naranjito stepped on the accelerator, and the offensive of Eduardo Quinones, who came by Haddock, went on break 20-15. A service fault byJuan Miguel Ruiz gave the Changos the championship, who won the third, 25-19.

For the Caribs, Cala scored 18 points, followed by Ruiz with 13 goals.

The Changos retained the championship increased their streak of titles, reached 23 trophies and enjoyed this championship as the first.

Naranjito won 3-1 in San Sebastian Series Final 2007 to defeat last night 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19 for the second championship win in the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon.

And held in yesterday because he had many big stones on the road to overcome.

Naranjito retained without three of its top players: Victor 'Vitito' Rivera, Angel Perez and Victor 'Chiqui' Bird.

Invaluable

The opposite American Steve Klosterman went selected Most Valuable Player of the Series Final 2007.

That is! Changos Champions 2007! It is the # 23

Three Americans replaced them, including an opener, which is one of the most important pieces of equipment.

"Losing the best corner that Puerto Rico (Rivera), the best opener (Perez) and one of the best opposites (Bird) is not easy. Besides, one was out almost a month without being replaced (by Tarr) and the boys managed to stay together. This championship is super important for us, "said Central Luis' Feņito 'Rodriguez, who now has won 14 championships with the Changos.

Naranjito increased it's streak to five championships. This is the second time in its history that it's reached that figure. The longest streak of Naranjito is six championships.

The current leader and player in the streak of six championships, Jose Luis' Nitro 'Diaz said that this title has been his best.

"I feel like the happiest man in the world. I won 11 championships as a player and I enjoyed those. But when we picked up this team and what we endured (streak of six defeats in the regular season)… we beat Corozal a series of intensity in the semifinals and to win the championship is the best thing that has happened to me in volleyball, "said Diaz.

San Sebastian returned to leave short staff yesterday, but brought the United States to its libero Eduardo Stawinsky.

Naranjito led throughout the first set, which took advantage of 8-6 and 16-13 before takeoff 23-19 with an attack by Omar Rivera.

For the second set, the Changos knocked attacks, defended the pitch and failed counterattack for a 8-5 to take off an 17-6.

Rivera led Naranjito with 14 points. He followed Rodriguez and Robert Tarr with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

For San Sebastian, Cala made 18 points and Angel Ruiz 13.

And Changos came to the 23 national championships in the history of the Senior Tournament of 49 years.

It is the largest total championships at the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation and, arguably, the greatest of sports federative Puerto Rico.

"It was very difficult because this year we were not favorites. It gave us to win because we had lost three horses (from last year's championship team). We demonstrate that those who come (this year)... Klosterman, Tarr & Hildebrand) are also important," said the owner of the Changos, Angel 'Papo' Colon.

"I dedicate this win to my daughter: 23 years and 23 championships, and to all Changos who are absent," added Colon.

The Changos overcame all the difficulties of the 2007 season

Robert Tarr

Commentary by Jose Ayala

With 23 championships to its credit, a long list of renowned players and the mystique that accompanies its name, the Changos of Naranjito long ago became a dynasty. But, going into the 2007 season, a cloud of uncertainty surrounded the most successful franchise in LVSM and questioned their ability to defend its four scepters in a row.

It is impossible to replace players of the caliber of Victor "Vitito" Rivera, Victor "Chiqui" Bird and Angel Perez, but Robert Tarr, Steve Klosterman and Tyler Hildebrand got his trousers and arrived in the job. :)

Similarly, Erick Haddock was immense in his first chance as a regular corner. As if that were not enough, young Emmanuel Batista and Omar Rivera -Novato the Year 2007 - also came to produce them when required. Rivera, in particular, came to the table after serving alongside regular Batista with the selection Youth and codeķ with the best in the tournament.

Juan Carlos "Agujita" Rivera brought stability to the sweeper position, as it gave him problems Naranjito last year, while Eduardo Quinones did all the dirty work requested.

Of course, all these components were united with the 'sticks' leadership of veteran Luis Feņito "Rodriguez. And despite the dismissal of David German late in the season, Jose Luis "Nitro" Diaz risked his neck and guided Naranjito to repeat the championship.

There may not be a team of Naranjito as vulnerable as that of this year in a long time, because although Rivera Perez and Bird are playing abroad, the experience of the current edition will be invaluable in search of championship number 24 and the sixth consecutive.

A championship full of sacrifices

The Changos of Naranjito are the most successful team in the LVSM after winning its twenty-third series final on Wednesday over San Sebastian. (First Time / Juan Luis Perez Martinez)

Bayamon .- Changos of Naranjito survived various crises over the season: the loss of three of its regular (Victor Rivera, Angel Perez and Victor Bird), the integration of three reinforcements rookies in international leagues, a streak of six defeats in a row, and the dismissal of (head coach) David German.

All this would have sunk any other team, but the Changos not only overcame the adversity, but succeeded on Wednesday its fifth consecutive championship and the number 23 in the history of the franchise.

"Take the team where it was, because it was difficult if it did not react, to risk my career as a head coach. I had to make the team react in any way, because if it was not wrong as a leader. I am very happy because this is my tournament number 15, 11 of them as a player and my first as a head coach in property, which was the most experienced, "said Jose Luis" Nitro "Diaz, who began the campaign as assistant to German and after his dismissal took the reins of the team.

Diaz stressed repeatedly that this edition of the Changos, contrary to popular opinion, had little experience, taking into account the talent that was lost in Rivera Perez and Bird. But notwithstanding that, left afloat.

"That is why I enjoyed this championship the most, and it is not because they are 'Vitito', and Angel 'Chiqui', as they are tremendous players, but because when I got this team, people did not know whether to welcome me or to give me sympathy because it was a new team and was in a bad attitude, and the team did not want to react. But, thank God, they supported me and did what I wanted to do and I tell you, I give them credit and thank the players, "said Diaz.

For his part, Steve Klosterman, Most Valuable Player of the final, adding that "it was an honor to play for the Changos and represent the tradition of Naranjito. It has been an honor to be in the same class as the other Changos who have come before me. Victor, 'Chiqui' Angel and supported us, but 'Feņo' (Luis Rodriguez) was the soul of this team. "

Luis Feņito "Rodriguez (center) dedicated the championship to his family.

"Feņito" Rodriguez: "The Lord of the Rings"
Friday, December 21, 2007
Jose Ayala Gordián / First Time

Bayamon. With 14 championships since he debuted with the Changos of Naranjito, the last five in a row, Luis Feņito "Rodriguez said this season was different from the others because they were not favorites to repeat the championship of the League Senior Men's Volleyball (LVSM).

"This year is very significant and different from the others by not having Victor (Rivera), Angel (Perez) and 'Chiqui' (Victor Bird). The forecast said that it was going to be very difficult, but now you see that we are celebrating. The work they did Steve (Klosterman), Tyler (Hildebrand) and Robert (Tarr) was excellent. They assumed the role and control of the game. Who thought they were going to assume that role? "Rodriguez noted in an interview with PRIMERA HORA after the victory over the Caribs.

At one point in the campaign regularly, Naranjito fell into third place in the table of positions to fall into a streak of six defeats in a row which cost them the post of head coach, David German. Rodriguez stressed that the Naranjioto team worked together to come alive at the time.

"Basically, David was a scapegoat for the bad streak. But he did an excellent job. He prepared this team to get us where we are. 'Papito' (Jose Luis Diaz) assumed the role and did an excellent job as well. Everything went to refocussing the team. "he said.

Asked if they return next year, Rodriguez replied that "We must see what happens this season, whether or not it changes again to the summer. But, I feel good and now we are going to represent Puerto Rico in the Pre-olímpico. I want to dedicate this championship to my family, my wife Ada Market, my sons Luis and Martin, and my sister-in-law Maria del Carmen Market. "

Found these on YouTube. Wish the passion the Puerto Ricans had for volleyball was this strong in the NCAA. You'll like watching these short clips:

Umbrellas come out when the roof leaks, and notice the stuff being thrown on the court. This is the same court the U.S. men are playing on this week in the Pre-olympicos there, but I'm told that when this occurred the bid to fix the roof was issued the next day:
