UCLA is very lucky to have two excellent OH's on the bench. I'm not sure about this, but does can anyone tell me whether or not Sather was UCLA's goto hitter last season; also how about Becky Green- was she a goto hitter in 2004?
Just curious because i'm still quite perplexed on how they ended up on the bench this year- esp. Sather.

And when JadeM comes in for her in the BR, it's pretty strong position all the way around for the Bruins. Sather did seem to mostly be their goto OH last year. And although I never really thought of Green(Mehring) as the goto OH in 2003/4 she has always had a way of putting the ball down with a variety of shots. An enviable 'problem' to have Carter, Sather, Lyman, Mehring, and Dailey to chose 3 OH/Opp from.

At the beginning of the 2004 season, Mehring was on the bench, however, due to the injuries sustained by other starters and the inconsistency of Brittany Ringel, Becky ended up as the L1 on the team in the mid season and assumed that role till the end of the year. Same thing happened to Carter in 2005, she began the season on the bench, Sather was the L1 and Johnson was the L2, Carter came out of nowhere to assumed the L1 in the middle of the season and Sather was moved to Opp. Sather was the kill leader for UCLA last year I though Sather will still start at Opp this year. However, Lyman's passing and defensive skill is too valuable to the team, even though she is not an offensive threat. Yeah, UCLA is lucky to have great depth in the OH positions

What position does Rachell play? She played all 5 games and had quite a few kill attempts. Does Colby mainly play back row and Rachell opp?

Johnson played middle on the team, she is the M2, she was a middle in high school and was recruited to switch to outside in college. Last year, she played outside and had a great late season with several 20 kills performances. With the graduation of Barba and the depth in the OH, she switched back to middle this year. She can definitely terminate the ball but her connection with Spicer seems to be off recently

So back to Colby, is she just defense, or all the way around? UCLA must have one of the deepest benches this year.

Colby :)played all around because of her defensive skills and passing. She usually has the least kill attempts among the starters and her hitting percentage is also one of the lowest among them. She had many injuries throughout her career but she is smooth and steady on the court. With her passing, Spicer can set Meriwhether effectively. If she is off or UCLA needed more offensive power, Sather usually came in to sub for her, Well Sather would sub for Carter/Daley/Lyman depending on who has a off night

I guess I have to believe in the Bruins now. UCLA tends to peak before the NCAA's.

I am not sure why UCLA is stuck on Johnson parked in the middle, she is hitting .253 and averaging 2.38 kills per game. In contrast Meriwether 4.18 kills per game, hitting .539. I have not seen Johnson ‘terminate’ the ball in the middle like she did playing OH. Does UCLA not have any other middles? What about Carstensen? Is Schoen still injured? Johnson seems more confident and has proved she is a more viable offensive weapon hitting from the outside positions.
