LOS ANGELES — It's never easy for the University of Washington volleyball team at Pauley Pavilion.
For the fifth time in six visits during coach Jim McLaughlin's tenure, Washington fell to UCLA at Pauley as the third-ranked Bruins rallied from a two-game deficit Thursday night to defeat the No. 4 Huskies, 3-2.
In front of a smallish but boisterous crowd of 1,476, UCLA overcame effective early hitting by Washington's Christal Morrison and Stevie Mussie to pull out the high-tension win, 28-30, 23-30, 30-21, 31-29, 15-13.
"It hurts terribly," McLaughlin said. "You're playing the No. 3 team well on their home court, you're in control, and it's taken away from you."
Washington (12-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) outhit UCLA .225 to .176 and posted more kills (76 to 69) and digs (84 to 70) but could not overcome effective blocks by Nana Meriwether (13 block assists plus two solo blocks) and 23 kills by Katie Carter.
"There were a lot of little, tiny plays that made the difference," McLaughlin said. "We were playing great early, but lost our composure late in the match."
Washington seized the momentum in Game 1 by rallying from a 26-23 deficit to win 30-28 on a block by Morrison. Mussie posted seven kills in Game 2 as UW cruised to a 30-23 win.
The Huskies fell behind 15-6 in Game 3 and never drew closer than six points, the first game UW has lost since Aug. 26 during a 3-2 defeat to then-No. 8 Texas.
Down 29-21 in Game 4, Washington almost staged a monstrous comeback. The Huskies scored the next eight points to knot the score at 29, but could not sustain the momentum.
Carter and Meriwether combined for seven kills in the fifth game. UCLA jumped out to a 7-1 lead, which UW cut to 14-13, but a final kill by Meriwether ended the match.
Mussie finished with a team-high 23 kills. Morrison, frequently the target of triple-team blocking walls, had 20. Alesha Deesing posted 12 kills. Janine Sandell, who was pulled in Game 5 in favor of Jill Collymore, and Jessica Swarbrick added 10 each.
"We just didn't play well when we needed to," said Thompson, UW's All-American setter. "We weren't spreading out our offense, and they were ganging up on Chris. So we started struggling."
Washington lost only two statistical battles, but both were revealing. UW recorded 14 service errors to UCLA's nine, and the Bruins posted six more team blocks (19.5 to 13.5).
Will such a loss hurt the Huskies?
"I don't think so, not this early," said McLaughlin. "It hurts because we had them right there, on their home court. But I think we'll be OK. It's a lesson that needed to be learned. We learned from losing here last year, and the way we handle this will say a lot about this team."
UCLA beat Washington 28-30, 23-30, 30-21, 31-29, 15-13 (UW highlights — Stevie Mussie 23 kills; Christal Morrison 20 kills, 13 digs; Alesha Deesing 12 kills; Courtney Thompson 69 assists, 13 digs; Tamari Miyashiro 29 digs. UCLA highlights — Katie Carter 23 kills; Nana Meriwether 15 kills, 15 blocks; Jordan Smith 23 digs).
