We have lost the audio, so I can only guess the final score of game 4 but teh Gauchos win it something like 30-24. We were up about 26-16, go the beachless will take some momentum into game 5. The big difference in this game (beside winning that rally of course) was the Gauchos remembering how to block.

TheSantaBarbarian Did you notice that stats on Sandell ? She still seems to have a high attack error ratio - maybe it was not the setting?

I think UCSB may heve blinked. We were up 10-8 and then have had several bad passes and unforced hitting errors and now are down 11-13

grats to the beachless, when it counted they steped up and UCSB steped in it. I don't know the final score but it was something like 12-15.

Really good match to watch- two evenly matched teams, tied at 11 in game 5, LB executes a little better at the end and takes 4 of the last 5 points. Classic match up of LB's high jumping power attack versus Gauchos quick attack- LB had a big size advantage at the net, which the Gauchos largly offset with improved blocking and fast balance offense.
Long Beach is a great volleyball venue- big noisy crowd, band, cheerleaders, souvenir stands, large food concessions, Big West booth, booster clubs, etc.- almost felt like a football game. Lots of energy in the Pyramid last night.

LBSU doesn't need `A' game vs. UCSB 49ers gut it out in Big West opener. By Frank Burlison, Staff writer After his team's Big West Conference-opening match in the Walter Pyramid on Friday night, Long Beach State coach Brian Gimmillaro had an initial reaction to his team's performance that was anything but enthusiastic. "We struggled all night," he said, glancing over the final stat sheet.
"I don't know that we did anything very well tonight. We needed to gut it out and that's what we did."
The reaction of his players, and an overwhelming percentage of the noisy crowd of 2,266, bordered on gleeful after the 49ers' stirring five-game victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
The 49ers (10-3 overall) will have to play even better tonight, in all likelihood, to sweep their weekend matches.
Tonight's opposition, the No. 20-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs, improved to 2-0 in conference and 10-4 overall with a four-game victory at UC Irvine Friday night.
The Mustangs beat UCSB in four games in Santa Barbara a week ago.
Long Beach's 19-30, 30-26, 30-27, 23-30 and 15-12 victory was one they almost assuredly needed if it is going to win the conference championship. In fact, the same might be said of tonight's match with the Mustangs.
The Gauchos, who knocked off then-eighth-ranked Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago, cruised in Game 1 and did the same thing in Game 4 before seemingly taking control of things with a 10-8 advantage in Game 5.
But the 49ers scored the next three points, one of those from a likely source (All-America middle blocker Alexis Crimes) and the other two from an unlikely source - little-used junior outside hitter Heather Hetzer.
Hetzer had played in only five games prior to Friday night but came off the sidelines to get a kill in the fourth game and then the two key points to help turn things around in Game 5.
"If not for Heather, we don't win the match," Gimmillaro said.Robin Miramontes set off an-court celebration by her team with the night's final point.
