The lack of blocking was mostly due to a combination of MN trying too hard to focus on offense, which was lacking last weekend - thus the defense was put on the back burner this weekend.... Oh please........ are you sure you want to stick with this rationalization? What did the Gophers do when MSU was attacking? Were they already running their next offensive play?

There is no doubt that the Badgers are the best blocking team in the conference and will be able to take PSU down. I can't wait. Or is it I can't waite?

You can't build a very effectiive case for any of the players getting more or less playing time based on the results of a single match. Tanner needs to play in the front more. 100% of the time she's been there, we've scored the point.

I haven't heard anything more than was said at the post-match reception.
She jammed her finger, and they were looking at it. Boos said that it's a common thing that happens, and (iirc) said that he didn't believe it would keep her from playing next (this) week. But it's gonna depend on what the doctors and Rachel say, I'm sure.

Tanner needs to play in the front more. 100% of the time she's been there, we've scored the point. How about allowing her to stay in the back row where she's been excellent and keep her at 100% in the front row for the rest of the season? Gotta love a referee refusing to allow a substitution because the player didn't make eye contact with the referee - even though - she didn't even bat an eye earlier in the match when both teams were making their substitutions while she was barely looking at the players. I guess you have to give her some credit for making net calls against either team when she was frequently watching the ball being played more than the net which is supposed to be her primary focus during play. She let a couple of pretty bad net molestations go because she was watching the ball being played instead of watching the net. Not one of the better reffing crews at the Pavilion this past weekend - though I guess they pretty much impacted all teams equally.

What is the protocol for subs in the NCAA anyhow? Do they need permission slips?

Oh, I'm glad someone brought up that up ref. Holy moly. Against Michigan, for the first game, it seemed like she'd phoned everyone in advance to let them know that no BHEs would be called and she'd overrule them if they were. (The up ref calls the ball, down ref the net, right?) So, fine, everybody was getting away with them. Then, she decided to start calling them or allowing them to be called -- and not even, necessarily, the worst ones. I can't imagine how frustrating that must be for players on both teams. Heck, even Mike "The Fire Still Burns, But Quietly" Hebert was getting up to ask her what planet she was calling lifts from.

I thought there was a change to the way substitutions were handled more than a year ago to have the referees be less intrusive when it came to handling substitution in order to speed up games and matches. I'll have to check the 2006 rulebook to see if I can find anything about it.

You folks complaining about the refs didn't have to deal with Joan Powell.
ESPN edited out most of the bad calls, which were in game 3 and then at the beginning of game 4. You did see the one where Main reached over the net and caught the ball and threw it back, but didn't get called for the carry. OTOH, you did see the second of the two carry calls that Powell DID make against her (Beth Mullins called it a back row attack, but it wasn't - it was a lift - at least I think; if Powell did call it a back row attack, she was wrong because Main was in the middle front rotation at the time)

Joan is the top referee in all of D1 volleyball compared to the referees that were here this weekend. There were numerous similar calls / non-calls to the ones you mention during both of the matches here this weekend. The rules and clarifications for lift calls are extremely vague and therefore don't lend themselves to any level of consistency from play to play by the same referee let alone from referee to referee. Its bad when you've seen referees call a lift on a dig attempt that took place pretty much instantly off of a hard attack then allows a middle blocker to do a water polo shot for an attack. If the referee is going to call a lift on that type of dig then virtually all setter dumps, and one handed lobs to anywhere on the court (especially to the deep corners) ought to be called as well.
