When they passed well -- games 1 and 3 -- the Gophers hit .296. You have to give credit to Rachel for at least some of that, especially against a team as good as PSU.
The passing was terrible in game 2 and they hit -.056. It was not very good in games 4 and 5 and they hit .188. Rachel has to do take part of the blame for that.
I just don't think her setting was the major problem last night. It was PASSING.
Nor do I think it was a mental thing. It was PASSING. Is that mental? Maybe a little. But PSU was serving great.

Don't you have some pet peeves to feed Wolfy? I could also have said she was 2nd on the team in hitting percentage at 0.300 and despite her alleged poor setting she had had 4 attackers on the team with double digit kills and nearly a 5th with Jessy Jones having 9 kills.

I didn't see last night's match, but Hartmann did a good job of setting against Wisconsin, as the Badger block wasn't much of a factor in that one, so she is capable of setting a good match against big blocking teams, even if she apparently didn't last night.

Speaking of sleeping, think the knitting Lions ever get tired of hearing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" every time they play someone on the road?
Hartmann was, however, outplayed by Glass. Although Glass should have had a couple of doubles called on her with the match on the line. That wouldn't have been so good.
Jessy had a bizarre night. She had that one play where she ended up on her back with her legs wrapped around the stanchion. She had that bumpset into the Minnesota bench. One of these days, however, she's going to start playing with more consistency and the Gophers will be even better than they are now.

Even though I was disappointed by the outcome of this match it was a fun game to watch. PSU is very polished even when they are out of system. The only other major criticism I have of the Gophers play (BESIDES THE PASSING) was the lack of defense on the tips. There were too many times when 3 Gopher defenders were in the vicinity but no one went for the ball. PSU was so good at this, someone usually got a hand on the tips even though they didn't get every one up and playable.

I thought Minnesota's setting was poor. I know the passing broke down big time but even then there was a good pass now and then that Hartmann did nothing with.
I think they should have gotten Tan out of serve receive long before they did.
I think Minnesota should have called a timeout sooner than they did in game 4.
I think Hodge has the biggest attitude I have ever seen a freshman have. She maybe the best player in America but I am glad she is not a Gopher. (and that's not sour grapes.)
I think I am out of thoughts.

The Star Tribune comes through again. www.startribune.com/512/story/773642.htmlGophers knocked from first place in five-game duel with Penn State Penn State reclaimed sole possession of first place in the Big Ten volleyball standings by rallying to defeat the Gophers in five games before an announced crowd of 4,986 Saturday at the Sports Pavilion. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 2, outlasted the No. 12 Gophers 21-30, 30-12, 26-30, 30-24, 15-13. The Nittany Lions, who had suffered their first loss of the season on Friday at Wisconsin, improved to 22-1 overall and 11-1 in the Big Ten. The loss ended a six-match winning streak for the Gophers, who had moved into a tie for first place with a victory over Ohio State on Friday. The Gophers, who lost for only the second time in 16 matches, fell to 16-6 overall, 10-2 in the Big Ten. Leading 2-1 in games, the Gophers jumped to a 20-15 lead in the fourth game, but the Nittany Lions went on a 12-2 run to take a 27-22 lead. With the fifth game tied 13-13, Megan Hodge had back-to-back kills to clinch the victory for Penn State. "Tonight was a great effort by our team," Gophers coach Mike Hebert said. "This was a match that was decided by a couple of breaks here and there, and matter of inches. It was highly competitive match in which both teams fought real hard. Both teams did a good job of bouncing back several times when it looked like the other had all the momentum." Nicole Fawcett, Christa Harmotto and Hodge each had 17 kills for the Nittany Lions. Melissa Walbridge added 14 kills for Penn State. Meghan Cumpston and Meredith Nelson each had 13 kills to lead the Gophers. "The toughest part of the match to look back in is the fourth game," Nelson said. "We had control of the match and a chance to win it, and they pushed back real hard. We just did not make a enough plays to finish the match off. I think we did a great job of leaving everything out there on the floor tonight, and everyone contributed throughout the match. It is a tough loss to take, but we need to rebound and continue to play well the rest of conference play." Kelly Bowman and Kyla Roehrig each added 11 kills for the Gophers. Malama Peniata contributed 14 digs and Rachel Hartmann contributed 45 set assists and 12 digs. The Nittany Lions beat the Gophers 30-24,25-30,30-20,30-26 in State College, Pa., earlier this month.

I have one more thought. "No way" Gophers could beat Penn State, chock full o'? Although it just barely didn't happen, kinda looked like there was a way, huh?

The Star Tribune comes through again. Well, they're publishing a bigger chunk of the press release our SID sends in. But that's something, at least.

Their boxscore is still wrong. That drives me crazy. You would think that a newspaper, when told something is inaccurate, would do something to correct it. I mean, that's kinda their business, no?
Oh, well. I'll just ignore it. (We outblocked PSU 4-2, by the way, according to the Strib.)

I've read a hundred reasons why the Gophers lost to Penn state. I would agree the setter was not at her best. However to me when you have 2 starters hitting negative #s, for 4 games, you would consider a possible line up change to see if a change might give you some time to let your 2 starters get settled down. For what' it's worth. I never see any critique of the coaches.
