UCSB chokes in game 1 31-33
A sad showing. We were up 25-19 and 27-24.
Quirarte is playing, has not been a major factor Waldowski and McLaughlin have been factors, Garbisch has not.
The saddest part is the lack of support at UCSB for this team. A CSTV match and there are more beachless fans than UCSB fans. Just sad.

UCSB has just quit playing. 3-11 game 2 17-30 Garbisch was just terrible in game 2 6 kills 8 errors 2 service errors. The passing and floor coverage was also just awful. This team has no mental toughness right now. Waldowski did come to play.

A quote from teh announcer
"They stop to wipe up the floor but it looks like UCSB is just throwing in the towel."

Still hoping for a miracle. Not surprised there are more Beachless fans. Darn It!!! Maybe they will come come out tough after the break. Keep posting. I'm reading.
It is good news that Brett's ankle isn't serious -- at least that's the assumption if she's playing.

30-22
UCSB grew a little bit of spine in game 3 but it was way to little, way to late.
Without looking at the stats, I would say that the only two Gauchos that came to play were McLaughlin and Waldowski.
We still have a chance at 3rd in the Big West which might give us a bid. However, we will probably need the same kind of gift that UOP got a couple of years ago.
A very poor showing by UCSB volleyball and the (lack of) UCSB fans tonight.

"It is good news that Brett's ankle isn't serious -- at least that's the assumption if she's playing. "
However, she was really a non-factor in the match tonight.

Brett was hesitant, did not see any support on her ankle. Waldowski had a good night; they should make her the go to player. Also leave her in the backrow, she plays with all her heart. she would be a good backrow hitter. Crimes had 19 kills, she floats above the net. The young lady from the Czech Republic is darn good also.

Waldowski had a good night; they should make her the go to player. Also leave her in the backrow, she plays with all her heart. she would be a good backrow hitter. Olivia is fun to watch, but she is definitely not a back row player. She shouldn't even be serving. Her serve is consistent, but not a powerful enough weapon to risk losing her to an injury. All of that heart she displays also gets her diving for balls in the back row. Let her do what she does best, dominate at the net.

This was the best game I have every seen Alexis play. www.longbeachstate.com/vol/wvol/REL06/gamewvol102806.htmLB Sweeps Gauchos 49ers Win for the first time in Thunderdome since '01 October 28, 2006 GOLETA, CA – The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team did something it hasn’t done since 2001: defeat UC Santa Barbara in the Thunderdome. The 49ers did just that with a sweep on Saturday night, behind 19 kills from Alexis Crimes. Game scores were 33-31, 30-17, 30-22. Long Beach State improved to 17-5, 7-2 Big West, while the Gauchos fell to 13-10, 5-5 Big West. Mischa Hasalikova posted 12 kills for a .417 attack percentage as well for LBSU. Dyanne Lawlor and Quincy Verdin checked in with nine and eight kills respectively. Talaya Whitfield had a team-best 17 digs as well. Olivia Waldowski had 12 kills for the Gauchos in the losing effort. Down 25-19 and 28-24, Long Beach State staged and incredible comeback to steal game one from the Gauchos, 33-31. LBSU even fought a game point at 29-28 and tied the set at 29-29 after a Gaucho attack error. The 49ers unlocked the 31-31 tie with two straight Crimes kills. She tallied seven kills in the frame. Long Beach State controlled the tempo of game two and used the offensive firepower from Verdin to come away with a commanding 30-17 victory for the 2-0 match lead. LBSU jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a Verdin kill, and built a 10-point lead (25-15) following another Verdin kill. The 49ers left little doubt the rest of the way and closed out the Gauchos on a UCSB attack error. LBSU used its defense in the third stanza and registered key blocks early to gain momentum and a 22-13 lead, en route to a 30-22 victory. Long Beach State concludes its road trip at UC Irvine on Saturday, Nov. 4.

I am glad that I have finally gotten CSTV and got a chance to see LBSU play. Crimes was really impressive, just hitting over people, even Waldowski, who was the most impressive Gaucho in this match. Otherwise, LBSU looked a lot better than the Gauchos in this match. Hasilikova can do a lot when they are in system, and I like the combo of Crimes in the middle and Crum on the slide. That is a pick your poison choice for the defense. The Beach looked like a team that could be a tough out in the NCAAs, but they really need to stay in system. Verdin obviously has injury issues and looked up and down. If they have to go to a high outside offense, I think they are done against good teams. UCSB just didn't look very good in this match. They will have to improve a lot to make a run and get into the NCAAs, and having an inexperienced middle in there doesn't help anything. Not much of a crowd, either, especially for what they said was a rivalry match. I am sure that Santa Barbara is a fun place, but isn't it also a volleyball hotbed?

I too just watched the match as I didn't make the trip North this weekend. Very sad to see such a sparse crowd in the T-Dome that's for sure....I guess their fans are a lot like many others(including ours btw) everyone loves a winner!! Alexis had a very good match, for once our setter and her were in synch.....if she could get sets like this all the time her stats would be off the charts!!! Misha IS the real deal and we are expecting some very impressive things from her down the road...nice to get the win in SB as we have found them very hard to come by in recent years....Brian changed the line-up back to what we had the last couple of weeks, but unfortunately he made a huge switch in SLO the night before and well, the results were not good

Before everyone starts griping about lack of support from the Gaucho fans... do any of you remember what Isla Vista is like on Halloween weekend?? I do, and making it to the Thunderdome would not have been a priority of mine!!
Somebody chime in here, do they make the tourney? and when is the last time they missed it?

Notes from the (sparsely populated) Thunderdome-- LBS had much better defensive play (digging and passing), and were much more powerful at the net- 19 to 8 blocking advantage. Most effective players for UCSB were Waldowski (hit .579 with 4 blocks), McLaughlin (hit .240 and hit line well) and Brandt (2 blocks and saved several overpasses).
The effort was good from both teams, as you would expect in a rivalry match being broadcast on TV- the difference between the teams was in the athleticism and execution by the players.

During Kathy's tenure (around 31 years), they have made it into NCAA playoffs EVERY YEAR! This could be an end to one of the longest streaks that I know of in women's volleyball. I'm still depressed!
