Kanoe did a pretty good job of spreading the offense even if the passing was bad.

Not exactly an offensive explosion, was it? I don't know how far Hawaii can go in the NCAAs, even at home, if they can't get better ball control. Mason and Houston probably would struggle to carry them to wins over good teams if those teams could key on them. Their middles can be effective, but getting them involved seems to be a struggle.

from what I have seen (well heard for the most part actually) this year's Hawaii team is really hot or cold. They can play with the best if they are on, but if they are off, then almost anyone can beat them. I think in Reno, probably we will meet up with NMSU again in the final and maybe have some opposition from Nevada, possibly SJSU and the Vandals along the way, but other than that it should be smooth sailing. I wonder if the WAC will ever go without the WAC tournament like so many of us have wished for in the past. IMO, the WAC tournament has more potential to hurt the Wahine than help them unless more teams like NMSU steps up their game and we are at least as competitve as WCC. I think this year we might be on par with the Big West another mid-major but that is not saying much....oh well...enough rambling

Is this a career-high for Kari Gregory (15 kills)?

They may have to face a pretty good team or two in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Hopefully, they'll play at home all the way through. I think next week's WAC Tournament will give a good indication of how ready they are for the NCAA's.

Does anyone know how many players made the trip for UH? Is Kitaguchi with the team? She's supposed to join the team in Reno for the tournament.

is there a reason why UH does not use the right side at all? Kaufman only got 8 sets the entire night in 4 games. Granted she may have been off and hit .000 for the night, but only getting 8 swings will not really let a person warm up

Granted she may have been off and hit .000 for the night, but only getting 8 swings will not really let a person warm up Hawaii has never been really big on using the right side as an offensive weapon. Usually they use it as a blocking position, as the Shoji loves to use the middle blockers to use the slide at the right side. This way he can still set the ball pin to pin in all rotations. Not completely sure I agree with the strategy but that is how it goes. Also, its a hard call as passing sounded really bad tonight, so it might have been really hard to get the right side involved. Kaufman usually hits the slide, so a bad pass doesn't allow the use of a right side hitter.

It looks like a less than great ball control night, from the set distribution. You have to think they would have gotten Gregory more sets if they could have, given how effective she was. Why doesn't Kanoe attack more? It seems like it might be a way of keeping the defense honest and prevent it from keying on Houston and Mason. I have to wonder about the lack of sets to the right side as well. I know they have an inexperienced player there, but I think you have to at least have the threat of a right side attack. Maybe they could run Kaufman to the middle and have the middle run the slide to spread out the defense. Wisconsin has had some success doing that. Of course, the timing isn't easy, and you do have to have a good pass or dig to do it.
