It just occured to me that the Wahine have had the worst luck their recently(well last time was 2000).
- 2000. The last game of the (reg.)season. If Hawaii wins they'll finsih out the regular season undefeated and likely top seed. The Beach upsets/ends it in four.
-1997? The Wahine get shipped to LBSU for the subregionals/Regionals and face Loyola Marymount(Sarah Noriega's team) in the first round and lose in 5?
I guess you could go even further than this, but it's just too much. Those two years/matches speak volumes as to how screwed it is to have to play in the Pyramid...

Actually, Hawaii's last match at THE BEACH was in 2001 where they suffered a regional semi-final loss to no other than... UCLA! I remember that game and it was frustrating to watch Willoughby swing and swing and swing, yet, no result. Seeing Jennifer Carey hitting from the right was like watching a four year old learning to play tennis! UCLA made a mess out of Hawaii. The next day, I watched Tayibba Haneef, Cheryl Weaver, and Brittany Hochevar cream UCLA, and it felt oh so good Hawaii does not have any luck when it comes to Long Beach, whether they challenge them, to playing on their court, etc. They have this psychological edge over Hawaii and let me tell you, seeing those long sleeved black and gold jerseys is pretty intimidating and brings back very bad memories. Hopefully, this will be the year where they survive the trecherous Walter Pyramid and make it back home to the safe confinements of the Stanley.

eh, pyramid, schir-amid
I'm not supertitious, besides this beach team is no where near as good as the 2000 or 2001 teams. Their best win is over a mediocre Missouri team. The Beach would probably finish 3rd in the WAC behind NMSU. They lost to Sac St. 3-0, a team NMSU beat 3-1.

Yeah with Willoughby's dynamics and athleticism, she's guaranteed kills. But UCLA soft blocked her to death and she committed 18 hitting errors. That means 4 and 1/2 HITTING ERRORS A GAME!!! That is TOO much by my standard It was an ugly match by the Wahine and hopefully, they'll turn things around at the Pyramid.

If 2001 was the last time the Wahine faced the Beach in the Pyramid, then no one on this year's team was a part of any negative history -- except for Dave and Kari. It will be a clean slate for them, starting with Oregon.

Speaking of Oregon, if the Wahine look past them they will regret it big time.....Oregon is NOT a team to underestimate! I won't even give farting time to the NMSU comments.....anyway to justify your loss UH, right???

Hawaii's Success (or lack thereof) at the Pyramid:
December 6, 2001: Hawaii vs. UCLA: Loss, 1-3 November 25, 2000: Hawaii vs. Long Beach State: Loss, 1-3 November 24, 2000: Hawaii vs. Cal Poly: Win, 3-1 December 5, 1997: Hawaii vs. Loyola Marymount: Loss, 0-3 November 1, 1997: Hawaii vs. Long Beach State: Loss, 0-3 December 9, 1994: Hawaii vs. Long Beach State: Loss, 2-3
Hawaii's overall record at the Pyramid: 1-5
Even more scary: Hawaii has never won a game against Long Beach State at the Pyramid.
I don't want to add to the superstition, but this history just isn't pretty.

I think the difference is that LBSU used to be a lot better than they are now. I think that streak will end this season, assuming the 49ers beat Pepperdine. To advance, LBSU will need to be able to run their middles a lot; I don't know if they will have the ball control to do that.
