The Gators got to play better because they have to knock off Minnesota and Nebraska next week! True and they will. I think the results of tonights matches tell you that this tourny is wide open. Nebraska dropped a game to American. Minnesota went 5 with St. Johns. CU pushed Washington in 4 games. Don't count out any team at this point.

And why does everyone hate on Florida? They played well tonight against a tough ASU team. They were not the only team to drop a game tonight. At least it was to a pac-10 school....

It's always easier to hate. Florida was in a no win situation as far as other fans were concerned. If they won easily, well, it's cause ASU barely made the tournament and some thought they didn't belong. If it went 4 or 5, then it proves Florida is overrated and shows just how tough the Pac-10 is. Either way, the Gators get no credit for the win. Hitting .310, 15 blocks, 89 digs, 71 kills, I'll take that every time out. Florida played well for most of the match. ASU played well from game 2 on. It was a very good match, typical of 2nd round matches we've seen the last few years.

Not everyone hates Florida. They played pretty well, really. Both they and ASU hit some hard stretches, but pulled through.

Bottom line is Florida is in the sweet 16 for the 15th time in Mary's 16 years, they won 30 matches for the 12th time in her 16 years and they are hosting a regional starting Friday. Win ugly, win pretty, just win.

Postgame quotes and notes
2006 NCAA Championship Gainesville, Florida Friday, Dec.1, 2006 Second Round Florida (3) vs. Arizona State (1)
Arizona State Head Coach Brad Saindon: On tonight’s match: “I enjoyed watching that match. I thought it was a well-played, high-level volleyball match. I liked how my team played and I liked how Florida played. Obviously I’m disappointed in the fact that we lost that match, but I thought it was good volleyball. We had a lot of trouble trying to contain Amber McCray. I thought she was really good tonight. We didn’t see her last night so she was a little bit of a surprise for us. It was a bad match-up for us. We had Nicole Morton and Margie Giordano trying to block her and I thought McCray was really, really good tonight. Hats off to Florida, they’re a great team and this is a wonderful place to play volleyball. We really enjoyed the experience of playing here at the University of Florida. The key moment of this match was how Florida came back from the deficit they were in during the second game.”
On service errors: “I don’t know what happened to our serving tonight, we’re generally a very good serving team. We’ve been a good serving team all year and I don’t know why we missed a whole bunch of serves, including match point. I don’t know if it’s the humidity and the air is a little thicker and the ball does a little bit different things here than it does in Arizona or out west, or if we were just nervous in an energized facility. But for sure, the service errors hurt us.”
On Florida’s Marcie Hampton: “This is the first time I’ve seen Marcie Hampton play and I’m so impressed with her. I wish I had her and I think a lot of coaches wish they had her, too. She’s terrific and she does so many things for Florida. She passes balls, she takes good swings, she’s a good blocker, she’s energized. I think she makes the people around her play better. You can tell she’s having fun and she likes playing. We would love to have a player like her. I thought she was terrific tonight.”
Arizona State Post-Match Notes • Junior middle blocker Staci Smith recorded 12 kills, making tonight’s match the first time she recorded double-figure kills in back-to-back matches this season. It is her sixth double-figure match in 2006. • Arizona State recorded 16 wins this season, its most since 2000 (18). • Junior libero Sydney Donahue recorded 23 digs in tonight’s match for her seventh straight match with 20 or more digs. • Senior outside hitter Nina Reeves’ 14 kills was her seventh consecutive match with double-figure kills. • Sophomore outside hitter Margie Giordano had 12 kills and 14 digs for her 14th double-double of the season.
Florida Head Coach Mary Wise: On the difference in the match: “I thought the biggest difference in the match was that we had better serving and passing statistics than a great serving team in Arizona State.”
On her team’s effort in the contest: “To me, block assists and digs are two of the best indications of effort. For us to have 89 digs in this match and 15 blocks in this match is a clear indication that we gave great effort tonight.”
Florida Post-Match Notes • Florida advanced to NCAA Regional Semifinal action for the 15th time in 16 seasons under Mary Wise • UF improved to 33-2 at home in NCAA play under Wise • Kelsey Bowers broke three records and tied another during the match. She broke the UF NCAA record for most block assists (10), tied the UF NCAA record for most total blocks (11) and broke the UF records by a sophomore in a single season for block assists (152) and total blocks (174) • Elyse Cusack recorded 21 digs during the match and became just the second player in UF history to surpass 500 in a season • Florida reach 30 wins in a season for the 14th time in school history and the 12th time in 16 seasons under Mary Wise

just by looking at the stats. ASU needed to play a little bit more defense. I expected Sydney Donahue to get a couple more digs. But she is a great defensive player. Well anyway Great job to ASU for doing a 180 from last season. From the cellar of the Pac-10 to the second round of NCAA's. GREAT JOB. Nice job Nina

Hey, having lived in Florida a few years, and having been to Arizona a few times, wouldn't write off the air comment without some testing or thought. If nothing else, it's in your head. Pac 10 players feel nothing like Florida humidity, if they don't schedule it, at any time during the year, and especially in dry Arizona. That being said, I'm sure the pressure of playing a superior Florida team got to ASU serve more than a funny looking float.

Also, inote Amber McRae is left handed. Only two lefthanded opposites in the Pac 10 and one is with ASU. Other is Goodenough at Arizona, who did not get set much. In fact, opposites didn't get set much anywhere in Pac 10, except USC, which explains Kaczors success a bit. Something to remember if/when Florida plays a Pac 10 school, (of course Florida will robably have to navigate the ultimate lefty from Nebraska). Cal Poly star Atherstone is left handed and plays opposite from the outside in, hitting at the net and then multiple bac row attacks from behind the 10 foot line, jumping in to hit sharp angles against the grain. I imagine Amber does the same, and defenses just don't see that much. Think Cal, then maybe Stanford will have trouble with that shot.

They play top teams all season long. Three of the four games played could have gone either way. Both teams played very well.

Well, it's nice to hear that Amber and Hampton are playing well. I haven't seen Florida much, but whenever I do, they don't seem very good - especially Hampton. If they reach their Regional Final I hope they play the best game of the season and knock out Nebraska.

Because throwing baseballs in a humidor in Colorado and having run production go down was all psychosomatic.
