Are you kidding? You think athletes want to attend Stanford because they've got a great volleyball program? the reason Stanford has a great volleyball program is because the school is "a great educational institution". A degree from Stanford is impressive. These players certainly don't go to Stanford because of Dunning's coaching, training, or a chance that they'll become better players. Stanford sells itself. If anything, Dunning is just riding the coattails of his players. If I wanted to maximize my ability as a player, I'd go to Hawai'i, U Dub, Or Long Beach State. If I wanted the best volleyball experience as a player, I'd go to Hawai'i or Nebraska. These young ladies go to Stanford because BASTA gives them the best chance to succeed outside of volleyball. It burns me when people make such idiotic statements like this one. Its so ridiculous to think that the many of the top rated high school volleyball players would choose their school solely on what kind of education they will get. You mean to tell me Alix Klineman wasn't thinking at all about volleyball training, but only the degree she will receive when she is finished. The idea that players just show up to Stanford and win national championships because of all the training they have received before they arrived there is ridiculous as well. Is John Dunning an incredible coach. Yes. Does he have one of the greatest assistant coaches in the US that trains and recruits for him. Yep. Denise Corlett doesn't get enough credit. However, you don't win 4 national championships (at 2 different schools) by riding the coattails of your players. If you are that kind of coach, you don't get the top players out of high school. Does the prestige of the university help with recruiting. Yep. But its only part of it. Just like the coliseum is only part of what Nebraska has to offer to recruits, and the potential "island celebrity" status is only part of what Hawaii has to offer.

If Klineman was interested in training, and developing as a player, she would have been better served going to U Dub or Hawai'i. Stanford, the academic institution, allows Dunning his choice of prospects. No other educational institution in the country can give its volleyball coach this kind of flexibility in recruitment. Stanford won with Shaw, they win with Dunning, heck, they'd win with Gorf coaching. Everyone in the country knows that Stanford gets the best prospects, and the rest is left for every other team to fight over. Again, it's the prestige of the school that keeps them coming. Anyone that thinks otherwise is stuck behind that stupid tree.

I know to many top athletes who wanted to go to Stanford and couldn't get in to think that we get whoever we want. Thank goodness Alix Klineman and Cynthia Barboza both had very good grades, because if they had a 3.0 with mediocre SATs they would be at USC.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is stuck behind that stupid tree. Again that's crap. Dunning has done a great job developing a lot of his players. Just look at the difference between Erin Waller and Franci Girard from this year to last season. It's like night and day. He can develop players just as well as anyone. Yes, Stanford gets the best prospects, but Dunning also helps develop them to their potential, or near potential. Just look at Texas or Penn State - ridiculous amounts of talent, and yet neither of them made it to the Final Four. Yes, Texas lost two middle blockers to injury, but they were still a stacked team. It takes just more than studs to win on a consistent basis and I'm sorry you can't see that. Again, just look at the players Dunning has had at Pacifc and who he has developed to see that he can and does develop players. It is quite a stupid question anyway. With the type of talent that a Klineman or Hodge or Engle possess, it wouldn't matter where they go because they will still be successful. For Klineman, it was just the combination of everything - including the coaching staff - that made her want to attend The Farm. No one wants to spend four years of their live with a coaching staff who they wouldn't believe could push them to be their best.

Hawai'i = UW? Even she doesn't think so! What Dave has been able to do with his program in developing his players is second to none. Do you think all of the players who earned AA awards, played on the National team, or played professionally started off being great players for Hawai'i? Hawai'i hasn't had a top recuiting class in ages yet Shoji still gets his team to at the very least, the regionals every year. His resume speaks for itself. As for the reference to Washington, Jim, much like Dave, has the ability to squeeze every ounce of talent out of his player. Players get better over the years at U Dub, just like they do at Hawai'i. That is the comparison. Washington still has a long ways to go before the accomplisments of their program can even be in the same league as Hawai'i.

No need to insult Elliot or Rose, Saki. Typical of you elitist Stanford posers who use blackguard tactics to get an advantage.

I think Stanford's performance tonight speaks for itself. Dunning has a way of making his players peak at the right time. Whether you're coaching the National Team or a high school team, that is really all you can ask for from a coach.

Okay, I have to admit that I was kidding in my bashing of John Dunning. I was intially trying to make fun of the John Cook thread with sarcasm here but then Cardfan responded and I got irritated so I decided to play on it and ended up getting into a foolish flaming war with Stanford fans. For the record, I respect and admire both John Dunning and Denise Corlett. I've been a Hawai'i fan for a long time and am very familiar with Dunning's accomplishments. Like (R)uffda, I get irritated by Stanford's continous recruiting success but that should certainly not downplay Dunning's success with those recruits. You know sometimes I have too much fun being an ass but I needed to clear the air on the matter. My apologies to the Cardinal Program. If it's any consolation, I was hoping you guys would beat Nebraska. And as an aside, I was just kidding about the scouting tape too. The intent was to annoy Wolfgang, it worked. ;D
