I too like Barboza. Fantastic player ! I think what bothers alot of posters is how many of you constantly drool all over everything she says or does. When I mentioned stalker earlier I wasn't kidding.

Can someone tell me who this girl is? I have never heard of her. Thanks, inner veins. You're being sarcastic, right? Well, if you're not, she's my avatar. ^^ She's a sophomore at Stanford who graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA and she was an Olympic team alternate at one time.

Very intelligent and well-spoken individual. In all my years of talking with athletes and doof coaches, I've only met a handful where I thought, "Gee, she is so polished and mature and intelligent."
I'll name them:
1. Tracy Stalls 2. Cynthia Barboza 3. Melody Eckmier 4. Renata Dargan 5. Jewel 6. Jewel's sister
Just a handful. The thing is, all these athletes may be intelligent and mature but to actually pull it off in an interview where you didn't know what you were going to be asked is quite a skill. And they get bonus points for using words not in my vocabulary.

Thank you for being civil, BM; I was expecting something else.
During the broadcast of the Washington match, there was a clip about Barboza's heritage. Cynthia said something about answering the question that so many people asked about her heritage. I didn't quite hear the answer clearly, something about Cape something and a couple of other countries? Did anyone catch that?

Cape Verdean. The Cape Verde Islands are off the coast of Senegal, which is in Western Africa.

Far be it from me to say anything nice about a Stanford player, but I've found Ms. Barboza to be an excellent example of a human being. Back at the Spring scrimmage against Cal last April, the Cal team was holding a (hastily arranged) clinic for Sports4Kids. Ms. Barboza was ambulatory although she probably wasn't cleared to play yet. She noticed a group of kids who didn't have anyone to show them VB technique, so she picked up a ball and started bumping with them. Not a huge thing, but I thought it was a nice gesture on her part.

She needs to do well next year if Stanford wins the NC. Alix Klineman can't do it alone. Although Ogonna single-handedly won the tournament all by herself in '04.

So what was up with her wearing 14 on thursday night? Also, from prematch intros, she has a lovely speaking voice. Perhaps one day she can replace Heather Sux Cox. I think it's been mentioned there was an ordeal with blood on the uniform or some such thing. 14 was the replacement jersey? I think that's the deal. She's really confident without being pompous nor uptight. It's really refreshing. they actually stated on saturday during the championship match that she actually forgot her jersey at the hotel.

Very well said.... heck did you see the post match interviews with Larson and Pavan. Both are very bright girls.... Pavan is a 4.0 bio chem major.... but they just didn't have the polish to conduct an interview. The few times I've seen Barboza give interviews.... I thought to myself... this girl needs her own show.

Volley, you're right, and thats why Pavan gets beat up by so many people on this site. She just is not a very charasmatic person, doesn't make her arrogant, or a bad person.
