I was at that 1986 championship match at the Spanos Center. I was 39 then, in my second year of playing (and watching) volleyball, and was a fanatic. Two friends and I drove from San Francisco to see it, sat in the first row of the second deck at one end of the court, and enjoyed every minute.
I'm pretty sure that that Nebraska team was the first to run slides. I know we'd never seen them before, and had watched quite a few Stanford and USF matches over the last couple of seasons. Great memories.

That photo of Liz Hert does not do her justice. She was a very lovely girl (physically) then, but you can't tell from the photo. Some are photogenic; others are not. In real life however, many non-photogenic people are actually quite beautiful when you see their animated faces.

The sacrifices the power houses have made during the 1980's to make volleyball a successful women's sport have cost alot of schools like Pacific, Hawaii, Long Beach State, and UCLA to name a few, several opportunities for a National Championship. Instead of seeding the tournament according to rankings like they do now, highly ranked teams were seeded according to geographic regions. I remember in 1989, , Hawaii was #1, Long Beach State #3, Pacific was #4, and Cal Poly was #19, all playing in the Northwest Regional. Long Beach defeated Hawaii in the Regional Finals in 5 games. That year, #3 Long Beach St., #2 UCLA, #5 Nebraska, and #9 Texas-Arlington played in the Final Four. #9 Texas Arlington beat Unranked North Carolina, #19 LSU, and #7 Texas to get to the Final Four. Nebraska beat Unranked Illinois St., #18 Minnesota, and #8 Illinois to go the Big Dance. UCLA beat Unranked Pepperdine, #10 Arizona, and #20 Wyoming to get to the Final Four. In the end Long Beach State whizzed through the Final Four, and won the championship in 3 games against Nebraska. Oh what could've been had they continue to seed the tournament according to national seeding instead of regional seeding.

the day John Dunning left to Stanford was the day tha Big West volleyball went in the dumper. They needed that third top tier program in the conference for recruiting purposes.
This has been a large contributor to the downfall of UCSB and LBSU, it was hard enough to recruit against the Pac-10 when they had three top programs in the conference.

I agree with that. The Big West was once the dominant conference, especially when Hawaii was a member. I think things are starting to turn around. Next year long Beach and Cal Poly should be stronger than last year. Irvine will be making a solid move forward along with Pacific and Santa Barbara is always in the mix.

Yes. Cal Poly is going to be a force in the Big West. I think this past season was just the begining of what's yet to come. Atherstone is a very good RS, and Houston is a big force in the middle.

She no longer goes by Sanders. In her senior season at Hawaii, she got married and took her then husbands last name, the marriage ended a couple years later and she decided to drop Sanders and just go with her maiden name.

Cal Poly will be in the FINAL FOUR in not too long if their recruits and transfers pan out. They breezed through the Big West without redshirt transfer Gabrielle Rivera, a 6'3 OH from the PR Junior National Team who can BALL! Stevenson recruited the most talented volleyball player to EVER come out of that area - Ashley Adams has dunked a basketball and she mabey only Stevenson can get her to train with some discipline. I have read Stevenson quoted as saying he may try Houston OPP the setter if Olawalafe hits the ground running. Hidayah Olawalafe is a 6'1 atheletic FREAK from E. Lansing. If these two (Prep Volleyball's #32 and 36) come into Stevenson motivated, he will have THE MOST DOMINANT BLOCKING TEAM IN THE COUNTRY!!! Atherstone was robbed to be Co- POY with Crimes. With her all around numbers - blocking like a middle - that was a true crime. People at the National team tryout in Omaha said she tore it up. Stevenson took St. Mary's from RPI #247 to #9 in three seasons and has taken Poly from #233 to #17 in two. He has never had any physical talent. Just really well trained teams. Everyone's saying he will go to UCSB when Gregory is done...but will he WANT To???

Funny I actually watched USC 2005 season opener against Cal Poly and I remember thinking, of USC should kill these guys. I remember Atherstone was awesome and their libero, Jackson. I was really impressed with Kristen Gilliam, she was their huge gun that year. Funny the season Poly jumps into the rankings is after their big gun graduated!

The 49ers are still trying to find their way. There is no question they have the talent to do it, I've seen glimpse of it in the match against Hawaii. They don't have a good, consistent LS.
