This afternoon, I watched the DVD of the 2006 NCAA 2nd round match between Hawaii and Long Beach State. Regarding the trash-talking, it was not that obvious from the TV broadcast what exactly was happening or what was said (for obvious reasons) and for all intents and purposes, I barely noticed those extracurricular shenanigans except when Chris MacLaughlin mentioned it on the air. I did rewind the DVD and I did catch those split-second long-distance shots of Verdin and others glaring across the net, but I was thinking, "what's the big whoop?" It seems the main perpetrators for the trash-talking and glares were Quincy Verdin and Alexis Crimes, with Mariko Crum not far behind. On one instance, Verdin got a yellow card. On the UH side, Juliana Sanders and Cayley Thurlby were doing it, too, so it wasn't exactly one-sided, you know what I mean? And of course, Jim and Chris sometimes make light-hearted jokes about Juliana Sanders' Kaneohe upbringing (i.e., thuggery) so it's expected from Sanders. By the way, I get a kick watching Sanders play. She smiles (with daggers) but she glares and yes, she scares the bejezus out of me, especially when I think of her Kaneohe upbringing. Anyway, I personally don't think trash-talking and glares are a big deal, especially in a sporting event, and particularly if the trash-talking is clever and witty and delivered with a British accent. But that's just me.What I want to know is: What was said across the net?
On the flip side, I noticed Cayley and Juliana Sanders were yelling and glaring (unprovoked) across the net in the USC-UH match. So, it seems UH learned something from the LBSU match. (...or was it provoked by the USC players...hmmm...). Again, I think trash-talking and the like raises the entertainment value of these matches (but I may be alone on this opinion).
I didn't want to re-read that loooong UH vs. LBSU (NCAA 2nd round) thread from a month ago. I thought a new thread was needed, preferably started by me. By the way, I thought the UH-LBSU match was very entertaining.
hey what's wrong with the Kane'ohe upbringing? I was lived in Kane'ohe my whole life. Sheesh, i even went to Castle High School. Nah, but Kane'ohe, isnt all that bad, unlike other parts of Oahu...
You must forgive Wolfgang. He's the Ultimate Townie.
