Has anyone heard this? Just saw an email stating AVP will not be in Sacramento this year?

I didn't know Sacramento was one of the AVP stops so I guess this news won't rock my world.

The AVP released a list about two months ago I think that I saw. They have scheduled San Francisco in mid Sept I believeinstead...no need for both cities... AVP would have been fine in Sacto if those who scheduled it were aware of how hot it is in mid summer. Scheduled in May or fall, Sacto is fine. Plenty of vball fans were there and a TON more would have been with different weather. They were lucky nobody passed out. Even the locals said, this is nuts!
Sept in SF should be ok and not too cold, as early fall can be nice thru early Oct.
Where it really belongs tho, is Santa Cruz. There are a ton of beaches besides the main one. And several towns besides Santa Cruz along the beaches. Someone needs to figure it out.

Couldn't agree more. It was too hot, they had dirty construction sand, and poor attendance. They had to delay the PM pools of the Cal Finals and offer free admission to get people in the seats. And while Cal Expo is not that bad the location they selected was in the middle of an asphalt parking lot. There are plenty of buildings on the campus that could have been used to create shadows for the outer courts and they could have begun each day in the late afternoon. I don't think the air temp kills the fans and players as much as being in the hot sun. One day Misty and Keri had to headline the morning session with a match on center court at 9:00AM then come back at 9:00PM that same day for their next match headlining the evening session.
And that was a poor marketing decision. So you head out to Cal Expo with the family to watch Olympians play volleyball. You sit through the AM session then leave for a few hours (and do what?) before returning for the evening session? Nuts. What do you do in the interim?
They call it beach volleyball not desert volleyball. It is like nobody bothered to ask any (volleyball) locals for advice.
In 1996(?) they had the AVP out at Folsom Lake in June and it was cold and overcast and they didn't hardly get any people. But it was a very scenic location. In late spring Sacto can range from highs in the low 60s to low 100s. In 2006 they baked.
Construction type sand is great for concrete but it makes a bad beach. Especially when it gets hot and they soak it to cool off, then it turns hard. Probably contributed to Karch's knee injury.
I think the Bay Area in September would be great. It could get pretty windy depending on the location but they can position the courts to block the wind. That is if they ask the locals.

They also dumped Colorado, where Wacholder won last year.
They dumped Honolulu last year after two years, but nobody really cares/is surprised.
You can bet they'll never dump Vegas.

Heard it is in Albany, about a few miles east of San Francisco.
Guess why the Sacramento AVP gig was a fiasco: the NCVA had a hand in organizing it!

Yeah, the marriage of the AVP and the NCVA was like Beauty and the Beast. The AVP tries hard to be so professional and the NCVA tries very hard not to. It seemed like there was no connection between the two, just two tennants living next door to each other. Although when it looked like they'd have empty seats in the background of the televised finals they postponed the NCVA's PM pool an hour and offer the players free admission. That's not so bad though as it reminded me of the early AVP when they would announce with pride "today's paid attendence, zero!"

Heard it is in Albany, about a few miles east of San Francisco. Guess why the Sacramento AVP gig was a fiasco: the NCVA had a hand in organizing it! I don't think that's right. They're announcing AVP indoor volleyball in Albany, New York. www.avp.com/news/article.jsp?id=7029The only place in Albany (California) that might be able to host something like this is the Golden Gate Fields racetrack. Nothing quite like the smell of horses to brighten up one's day. If they really want a good spot, I'd recommend Edwards Track Stadium on the Cal campus. Back when there were Bay Area Olympics organizing committees, Edwards Stadium was the planned site for beach volleyball. There isn't a whole lot of parking, but it's only a few blocks walk from the BART station. We can get 65,000 people on football game days, so an AVP event should be a piece of cake. I guess the only problem would be objections from the city and/or residents, although there would be much overflow into the residential areas like on football game days.

Well, how do you get rid of the current leadership at the NCVA. They seem to be so untouchable!

Would they play down by the swimming pavilion? Will Long Beach let Cuervo/Miller on the beach?

They've had a stop in Long Beach before - can't remember exactly when but I think it was about 5 or 6 years ago. The sand isn't ideal - very hard packed - but besides that it's a decent venue. It was held close to the pool, not right next to it but close by. Would they play down by the swimming pavilion? Will Long Beach let Cuervo/Miller on the beach?

It was more like 10-12 years ago and they brought in sand,,,,very bad sand....there are several locations where they could do this and have beer on the ocean.....Misty May has a home in Long Beach......
