Normally I wouldn't start a thread that is so negative but I'm getting a little bored during this off-season. So I was wondering what you guys thought were some of the notable dumb coaching moves. It could be recent or from a while back. It could be for the Title Game or a pre-season match. Whatever.
The ones that come to mind for me:
1) 2006 - Russ Rose sacrificing ball control for height and power. He let Megan Hodge massacre serve receive, and subbed in a bunch of anonymous DS in for his other two non-passing OHs. He had a player in Kate Price that could hit and pass in 6 rotations, but he generally kept her out of the front row. The irony lies in how Penn State lacked the ball control that would allow them to set their tall powerful MBs and OPP.
2) 2002-2006 John Dunning's low priority for the libero. The libero position was a weak point when the Cardinal lost to USC in the 2002 NCAA Final. Courtney Schultz was a major target for serving and attacking. She may not have cost Stanford the title, but she wasn't a big help. You would think that Dunning had learned his lesson, but now this past season Fishburn severely hurt the Cardinal's chances of beating Nebraska. Considering Richards and Barboza are excellent serve receivers, it made it obvious who to serve. Finally, Dunning seems to have a good kid coming in w/ Gaby Ailes. Oh but she's not on a scholarship (?!). Dunning really got away w/ one there.
3) 1999 and 2001 NCAA Final Four. Stanford vs Long Beach State. Brian Gimmallaro doesn't bother w/ match ups and only seems to worry about his side of the net. Well, that allowed Stanford to hit clean over the 49er's little setter at will. Long Beach State players also didn't seem to make any adustments to the Stanford hitters. The ball would be spiked down a couple feet in front of the Long Beach State digger repeatedly.
4) 1996 Olympics. Liskevych keeping out Karen Kemner for Tammy Liley. The passes were off the net. The US was unable to run their formidable offense. It was largely in part to Tammy Liley's poor passing (her hitting wasn't great either). Liskevych seemed to play favorites and kept out a great player w/ wonderful ball control, blistering heat on her spikes, and a fiery spirit.
