That's not what fan is saying. He/she is saying the BB scholarship counts against the VB program's 12.
As far as I know, no one knows for sure if KR is playing next Fall. This may just be something she wanted to try this Spring -- see how it goes?
I don't know about any of this. I'm just speculating.

I don't know what I'm talking about either. I'm just glad that we have what appears to be a very solid MB coming in '08. Now if only Sarah Paven's sister is as good as she is and likes what she sees/hears this weekend. (Again, speculating, cuz I don't know if she's actually coming.)

I was told by someone close to the VB department that Roysland will be on scholarship in 07, she is taking a couple of classes to stay on scholarship. However, since BB is the major sport the scholarship will be counted against the BB number.
It sounds as though, barring KR deciding not to play in 07, that she will be on the team. They are looking to her for some leadership given Jones is the only senior next year. I'm not saying she is expected to see significant playing time. But she is a tremendous athlete and could be brought in from time to time.

If you watched Gopher Sports weekly on Tuesday night there was a story on Roysland and SHE said she would be joining the Volleyball team after the BB season was over. Hebert has been crazy about Roysland forever so this is no surprise.

Just throwing this out there -- but Becky Pavan is listed as a MB and is an '08 recruit as well. I've read that at 6'4", she has played multiple positions.

However, since BB is the major sport the scholarship will be counted against the BB number. It's for players in the same academic year. The hierarchy in NCAA D-I women's sports is: 1) Basketball 2) Volleyball 3) All other sports For men it's: 1) Football 2) Basketball 3) Ice hockey 4) All other sports. The only exception in men's sports is that dual swimming/water polo players must count their scholarship againt swimming's totals.

2 comments: the 08 middle from Front Range is the talk of Colorado volleyball right now. She can really play and will make a major impact on the Gopher's level of play. Also, if the BB player is not playing BB during that season, she cannot receive a BB scholarship and play VB. That might be considered "stretching the rules" don't you think.

Also, if the BB player is not playing BB during that season, she cannot receive a BB scholarship and play VB. That might be considered "stretching the rules" don't you think. "Athletics financial aid" is generally for an academic year. A BB player could play VB (in the Spring season) after the BB season is over while receiving a BB scholarship for that academic year. I've actually seen student-athletes join a VB team after the VB regular season. It would only be considered "stretching the rules" for a student-athlete to receive a scholarship in a sport without playing or practicing in that sport for the academic year in which it's assigned. I remember about a decade ago, UCLA had to vacate a national championship in softball. Part of the reason was a player who never showed up for classes and abruptly left after the season ended. The main reason was the soccer scholarships assigned to several softball players (when the softball limit was maxed out), who never played/practiced soccer. There could be all sorts of things. One would be the VB/BB player receiving a BB scholarship. Another would be someone exhausting 4 years BB eligibility, then getting a VB scholarship in a fifth year.

I don't understand any of this, but don't players get 5 years of scholarship $$ and 4 years of eligibility?

So is the commitment official? I've not found anything that confirms it.

I don't understand any of this, but don't players get 5 years of scholarship $$ and 4 years of eligibility? Not necessarily. I understand that it's not unusual for athletic departments to provide a fifth (or even sixth) year of a full ride after four straight years of eligibility. However - they're not obligated to do so. Strangely enough, there is eligibility to practice in a fifth year even after eligibility to compete is exhausted. I've heard of four-year VB players who were hooked up with a BB scholarship in a fifth year. No reason why it couldn't work the other way around.

Sources close to one of the local programs in Gopherville have informed me that Minnesota has received a commitment from a top '08 middle. Apparently this middle has played with the US HP program and many of the incoming recruits (NL) know her well. Anybody have any scoop on this? Since the commitment is not confirmed, you should have made the topic a QUESTION and not an announcement.

This commitment -- Ariana Filho to the Gophers -- has now received the Official Tawa Stomp of Approval.
Now I'll ask: how does one pronounce Filho? Is it Portuguese? I've seen it as a Brazilian name.
By the way, sounds like a terrific commitment for the Gophers.
