www.dailyherald.com/sports/story.asp?id=290092Wednesday, March 14, 2007 SPORTS 7 DAY STORY SEARCH She’s all set: Kocher makes commitment to Texas By Dave Miller Daily Herald Sports Writer Posted Tuesday, March 13, 2007 It’s been quite a junior year for St. Francis volleyball player Michelle Kocher. In the fall, the 5-foot-10 setter directed the Spartans to the Class AA state championship. Now she’s made her college decision. Kocher verbally committed to the University of Texas over the weekend. “Texas for awhile has been kind of my dream school,” she said. “I’ve always been interested in Texas. I’ve been in Texas for other volleyball reasons like tournaments and stuff like that and just loved it down there. I know Texas has a long tradition of success and I’ve always wanted to be a part of it.” Texas finished 2006 ranked seventh in the nation with a 24-7 record. Kocher chose the Longhorns over Tennessee after making unofficial visits to both schools within the past three weeks. “It all kind of happened very suddenly,” Kocher said. “When I visited Tennessee I loved it and thought I could wind up going there and then shortly after I visited Texas and ended up liking it even more. It was kind of a tough call, but I feel like I made the right decision.” The vibrant city of Austin helped sell the Longhorns to Kocher. “What I was really impressed with Texas is that, yeah, they had the campus and kind of the college-town feel, but then outside of that they had so much else to offer,” she said. “It wasn’t like you were stuck in a college town.” Committing to the standout program adds to the junior’s eventful school year that began with her setting St. Francis to the state title and a No. 8 national ranking with a 41-2 record, which included an unbeaten mark against Illinois teams. “I can’t really complain about much,” Kocher said. “It’s been quite an experience.”

So does anyone have any insight on Kocher? I would assume she's got to be a good setter being on the SP Elite 18 team.

Interesting that a midwesterner wants to go south. I agree that Austin is a great town. I'm just disappointed that absolutely nothing was mentioned about the academic program that caught her eye in Texas.

It isn't the academics that most kids are interested in when they go to Texas. Elliott is a good recruiter (I reserve comment on his coaching ability), and the 6th street "scene" is very attractive for a midwestern kid who wants to explore the finer parts of the collegiate experience away from home.`What no one has mentioned however is how is Engel going to feel about this. She was promised a 5-1 setting position when Elliott was recruiting her. Could make for an interesting situation with her.

Yes, I agree, most out-of-state kids I know who have contemplated Texas don't have scholarly goals as their primary reason for wanting to go to Austin. I guess the 2 step and NCAA dance are the main concerns.
Without getting into a personal attack, what coaching technique or issue don't you like ? Poor game strategy, no swing blocking, lack of back row attack, etc......

Despite its party reputation, UT is one of the top public schools in the country academically. According to Princeton Review, U of T ranks 6th in "students almost never study" 3rd in "lots of beer" 2nd in "lots of hard liquor" 1st in "party school" 13th in "reefer madness" and 14th in "great libraries"
I guess that all makes for a top public school.

It's also ranked 47 in U.S. News. The only other public schools on the list ranking above:
Cal UVA Michigan UCLA UNC William & Mary Wisconsin UCSD Georgia Tech Illinois Washington UCI
I think that qualifies UT as being a pretty good school academically.

UT may be a good school academically but its volleyball players need to do a little better job as UT only had 3 players make academic All-Big 12. NU & KSU had 8 members, Baylor 6, & KU 5.
