I am so happy to get to see some volleyball action again!
............................ PURDUE SPRING TOURNAMENT.....................................
10:00 .........PURDUE VS. BALL STATE .........VALPO VS. INDIANA
11:30 .........PURDUE VS. VALPO .................. BALL STATE VS. INDIANA
1:30 ............PURDUE VS. INDIANA ............... BALL STATE VS. VALPO
I know everyone talks about how Spring Ball doesn't mean much, but I need a fix!

Actually, I am looking forward to it. Will be interesting to see Boos coaching for Ball St (and IU has the new coach, but that's less interesting, at least for now), and it will be good to see Carin and Keith from Valpo.
Oh, and I guess there will be some volleyball being played, too.
BTW, the Purdue fall schedule is out. The most intriguing date is 9/14-15, in Columbus, in what is being billed as "Big Ten Pac Ten Challenge": tOSU, Purdue, USC, and Oregon.
Are there more of these, or is just something that this group has set up? Regardless, I love it. Now if we could get the Big 12 in the mix, it would be awesome.

I just read the Purdue Fall schedule, too. I think it is interesting that we are playing so many Carolina's! ... Aug 24 - Duke Invitational, in NC (Duke, Purdue, East Carolina & Winthrop) ....Mortar Board Tournamet at Purdue - North Carolina is playing ... Sept 7 - Clemson tournament in SC Is there a recruit or 2 they want to see in that area? Or did they just find lots of interest in playing us, in that neck of the woods? And I was curious about the "Big Ten Pac Ten Challenge" . Do we play USC or Oregon? or both?

I'm guessing both. USC on one day, Oregon on the next.
Probably won't play tOSU.

Great to see VB again being played, even if just for the FUN of it?? Purdue ends up 7-2 for the day in games won...think that was best of the 4 teams there. Looks like VB healthy in the state of Indiana! Why isn't Merlau playing for Purdue?

Danita is recovering from a stress fracture. She is able to play some back row (and did yesterday) but no jumping for a couple of months.
Purdue won 2 of 3 against Ball St, 2 of 3 against IU, and all three against Valpo.
That first game against Ball St was really, really ugly. Purdue couldn't even return free balls. 2nd and third games were more as expected.
Against IU, they went up and down with Mastandrea. If Annie was ok, then Purdue was ok. When she was struggling, Purdue struggled. They hit one rotation where IU scored 11 of their 25 points in game 2 (they started out 8 - 0). The wins against IU weren't close. IU only had 7 players, so they were getting tired, I'm sure.
IU took three from Ball St. Valpo took 2 of 3 from IU. I didn't stick around until the very end, but when I left Valpo and Ball St were tied 1 game each.
I was never able to get around to talk to Boos, unfortunately. I will have to go down there this fall. It was good to see Valpo coaches (Carin Avery and Keith Shunzell) again.

I had heard that Danita (Merlau) wasn't supposed to play because of the stress fracture, so I was surprised she played a little in the backrow. It sure was nice to see so many players on the sidelines. Dave's first year, we had to cancel the Spring Tournament because we didn't have enough healthy players. Lisa (Pierce) is still recovering from ACL surgery, but everyone else played, if only for a little bit. You know, you just have to have Shondells on the court somehow! Lindsay and Ashlee Shondell were the line refs. Replacing the consistency that Brittany (Dildine) brought to the team in the backrow is going to be hard. She had great jump serves, and would throw her body with abandon at anything. Annie (Mastandrea) and Kelli (Miller) are a great base for the backrow, but a 3rd person is going to have to step up, I think. The new coach at IU (Sherry Dunbar) is very tall! I kept trying to decide if she was one of the players, or the coach, at the beginning of the match... I looked her up. She is 6'2", as tall as her tallest player (Erica Short). Isn't that a great name for a tall player? I didn't realize that Keith was coaching at Valpo - it was nice to see him on the bench, again. Overall, I was just happy to get my "fix". I have really missed seeing the team play.

I had heard that Danita (Merlau) wasn't supposed to play because of the stress fracture, so I was surprised she played a little in the backrow. I had heard last week that she was doing some backrow work, just no jumping. I'm surprised you didn't hear that, too. You must have been distracted with something else. I missed game three against Valpo. Did Sess and MoDoc get more playing time there? Krystal King and Katie Bremner played a lot on Sat, albeit unspectacularly. Annie's going to have to bring some consistency, she can't have bad games like she did in game 1 against Ball St (although that wasn't all her fault), and game 2 against IU. OTOH, I think it was Kelli who pulled off perhaps the sweetest play you will ever see. Purdue dig goes bad outside the antenna, Kelli runs under the net (outside the court), plays it back (outside the antenna), and then it was sent over. Ultimately, Purdue won the point. I know the rule says you can do it, but I've never seen it pulled off before. Most people were looking at the ref, and he just shrugged. It's legal. I went up to see Keith and Valpo once last year.

Does Purdue have a libero coming in this fall? I haven't read that he has. I am surprised that with all of his Indiana background, he didn't snag a player.

L? I don't know. Defensive specialist? Technically yes, but...it is Shondell's niece.
But hey, if she can beat out King, McCormick, and/or Bremner (at least), then she would be a good addition to the team.
BTW, I should mention that I was especially pleased with the backcourt play of Carrie Gurnell on Saturday. She plays aggressively and is quick. From what we saw Saturday, I don't think it is a stretch that she could play all the way around.

How could I have forgotten that already? Thanks for reminding me! It was Annie that ran down the ball on the court, and sent it back to Purdue's side. I was so amazed, I forgot to take a picture until I realized what she had done. Here is an earlier shot, that shows the full court. so you can have an idea of how far she had to run. (Purdue was playing on the far court when Annie made the awesome play.) In the 2nd picture, the PU of PURDUE on the floor is not even in the picture.

Jessica Ullrich is also an incoming 2007 recruit listed as a "DS". The last thing I read about her was that she served 10 straight points for her team, 1st Alliance 18 ... but it is hard to find anything mentioned about backrow players. I hope that is something that changes soon!
