I hope to attend the scrimmage against CSU on Saturday but not sure I can pull it off. Where did Pavan play defense since she was in the backrow at the same time as a setter?
I know everyone is all excited about Licht and the return of the 6-2 but it's way too early to put that into stone given so many unanswered questions. My concerns still are Griffin's ability to lead when she is on the court secondly her inability to play any sort of consistant defense. Thirdly her ability to serve tough. I know she's a great kid, there's no denying that but she knew how the table was going to be set prior to her arrival given Holloway's credentials.
My prediction is still that they will run a 5-1 with Holloway and use a situational 6-2 with Licht and Griffin. What fun or stress for John to have so much talent. Oh to keep them all happy!!

You know Maggie had some nice credentials of her own. Including leading Spri to back to back 18 open titles while being named MVP both years of the Junior Olympics.... and wasn't she also a top 10 recruit? Why all this hate towards Maggie. The girl is an amazing setter her defense might not be the best though.

She just didn't bring that extra something to the Huskers last year that Holloway did.

I think that is so hard to say. If we are comparing the the 6-2 from the year prior with a lack of libero and over lack of good ball control then I don't think you could compare that. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but we didn't get to see Maggie shine in the 5-1 last year more than one game. They are very comparable setters skill wise. A 6-2 with Griffin and Holloway is far superior to the 6-2 in 05 with Busboom and Griffin. I hope they try the 6-2 and get all that talent on the floor.

I agree there is NO comparision to Holloway/Griffin and Griffin/Busboom combo. I did get to see Griffin struggle to lead the Huskers against Creighton in setting more than a game and a half. The Huskers were passing just fine at that point. It is hard to say but something just seemed to be missing. My bigger concern with the 6-2 is Pavan. She is a HUGE assest as a back row attacker from the right side, the angles she could/can attack were just unreal. Unless Cook is rewriting the setting book on court positioning Pavan couldn't attack from the right side in the BR accept on serve receive. An even bigger problem is her playing defense in the middle or even the left. If she and Griffin were both in the back row at the same time, we better block the ball. I think most Huskers fans agree that the ultimate differences in last seasons success were much improved floor defense, consistant setting--all american level setting and overall ball control. They are comparable(Griffin/Holloway) in setting but not in serving and defense. The Huskers were not as strong of blocking team last year but the improvement in defense behind the block was more than enough to make up for that. From what we've heard of Schwartz so far this spring(yes limited viewings) she has stepped in quite nicely at the libero position.....so having her on the floor makes decisions in who stays and sits in the backrow much more complicated for Coach Cook. Again, no ill will towards Griffin, I just hope that if Cook uses a 6-2 over the long haul that it's what is the best use of their talent. :-)

During the broadcast of the Wichita St. match Wischmeier pointed out that when in the back row Sarah would be attacking mostly from middle back if they ran a 6-2. She did not mention anything about her defensive positioning.

Thanks.....I figured she was probably in middle back for defensive purposes.

In fact most people agree that she is a very nice girl and in my opinion will be a very successful person outside of volleyball. However, the difference between her and Holloway is the decision making and the court presence. That is very obvious...also of course the defense. Holloway is basically what a Busboom/Griffin setter would be. Athletic and very talented setting wise. Also totally agree that a 6-2 with Griffin/Holloway is a much better situation than a 6-2 with Busboom/Griffin. I trust Cook to make the right decision and in all honesty will be completely comfortable with either.

Pavan could defend middle back and still swing right back. It's not that difficult... I've seen many teams do it.

Pavan couldn't even lift the bar, let alone weights, when she first arrived. As a freshman, she may not have been able to lift the bar (which, btw, is an exaggeration), but she sure could hit the ball and score and when all is said and done, that's all that really counts.

FYI----This came right from Cooks mouth during this years recruiting class presser while talking about Lindsey Licht. Not the first time that has been noted. At the start of Pavans sophomore spring, it was noted how she had put on 20lbs of muscle through strength and conditioning and once again it was mentioned she couldn't lift the bar when she first arrived.

At this point I don't know what is fact or fiction, but wasn't Pavan the MVP of the world Youth Championships even though Canada failed to win a match?
Licht was on the A2 team. I'm going to give USAV more credit than to say they left the worlds best player in her age group off the YNT Roster.
I haven't seen her, but I'm going to guess that there is something that Pavan had that Licht does not. The good news for Huskernation is that Licht doesn't HAVE to be Pavan this year...and with the reviews on Cooper being so bright, Licht may not have to be Pavan for a few years.

It would make more sense for Pavan to play middle back and attack the pipe. I think they have been putting Larson and Pavan opposite one another and Licht and Houghteling opposite. The setters were going in for the middles and Schwartz was in for Houghteling and Licht. I'm guessing she'll serve for Licht if Cook sticks with this system.

This would put Licht and Pavan in the front row together for one rotation? I would think Pavan would be opposite Licht and Larson and Houghtelling opposites also.
