Wolfgang says you always need an "Other" category so for his benefit, I left off one of the team names ;D

It wouldn't make sense to have all eight teams listed and still have an other so I had to leave them off. Wolfgang would have hammered me if I hadn't. Trust me, it was truly random of who got left off

hey just came home from san diego...pavan/larson def. barboza/kehoe 2-1, winning 17-15 in the third...definitely worth the trip out there, although it seemed more like a tennis match than a vollleyball game...crowd was pretty quiet

It was an interesting day at the beach today. Neither Nebraska or Stanford won their pools. Nebraska was beaten by Jennings and Engle from Texas. Atherstone and Hayes from Cal Poly almost took Pavan and Larson too. Had Cal Poly beaten them in that close 3 game match Nebraska would have been sent packing. As it was there was a 3 way tie for first place in that pool. Cal Poly won the pool on games won/lost record.
The other pool was easily swept by Sutherland and Csaszi from USD who hammered Barboza and Kehoe in the first match of the day. Rumor had it that the event organizers were panicking because the "golden teams" were not winning as planned. But, the volleyball TV gods were watching and Nebraska and Stanford both made it into the semis as the 2nd place team from both pools.
Unfortunately Stanford beat Cal Poly easily in the semis...Atherstone was not the same steady player she had been in the morning pool. It looked she got tired and lost some ball control. It was a boring match.
The other semi final saw Nebraska squeak out a win in game one with USD. This was a great game with lots of good vb. The crowd really got behind the local San Diego girls. The size difference was huge. Pavan 6'5", Larson 6'2" and Sutherland and Csazsi at 5'11" each.
IMO Larson was the X factor in the win. She does have excellent ball control and is very quick on defense. If San Diego had given the ball more to Pavan this might have had a different outcome.
Also, this really wasn't "sand" volleyball. It was more like "dirt" volleyball and it was very hard packed. In true Manhattan Beach sand the teams from Cal Poly, San Diego and Texas would have easily dominated. Allyson Jennings was incredible and the rock on that team. Bad luck kept them out of the semi finals. Chelsea Hayes was also impressive. It's funny that the smaller girls were usually the better ball control players on these teams.
However, I do think it was probably better for TV ratings to have both Stanford and Nebraska make it into the finals. Jordan Larson will be a force on the beach in years to come if she goes that route.

I'm not playing the sport again until they come up with a way to get me clean afterwards.
Insert your own joke here.
