The rest of the MAC have a long way to go to catch up. BG had a nice season last year, even taking OU to 5 games, but then couldn't sustain and got crushed in 3 in their second meeting. OU is going to keep improving, however, if the rest of the MAC doesn't close the gap then look for more 1st or 2nd round losses since they don't have to compete at their best for the last two months of the season leading into the tournament. Common MAC, remember the days when Northern Illinois, Miami, Western Michigan and Ball State all deserved to make the tourney on a yearly basis? Only Carolyn is still Coaching in the league since the last time the MAC got multiple teams in the tournament.

What is the highest a MAC team has ever advanced in the NCAA tournament?

I am getting too old, can't remember if the 2005 Bobcats were within a whisker of making it to the final 4 or the final 8. I think they lost in the round of 16. But I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. :-) I believe that was the farthest a MAC team has made it.

Didn't Miami make it to the final 16 in 2001 or so?
RichKern.com is my friend, but laziness is my life.

Nope. It was Miami, Florida. They knocked off the Badgers, if I recall.

It was the University of Miami, which is in Florida, which made the Sweet Sixteen in 2002. Don't ask me how I know that; it is an unpleasant memory. Miami University is in Ohio. Since they have different official names, I think that is the best way to keep them straight.

I've heard of a story about how those two schools met sometime in the 60's (men's basketball?) to settle which one needed to use an additional identifier. The story was told by former Miami (of Florida) basketball player Rick Barry.

The way I remember the difference is from an old Notre Dame football T-shirt that said "You can't spell 'SCUM' without 'UM'". This was when ND and UM had the big football rivalry, Jimmy Johnson, Lou Holtz, etc.

I looked at the various schools I could find and Ohio came within whiskers of the final 8. They lost to Arizona who lost to Santa Clara....I did see that WMU went final 8 in 1983...they lost in the Regional final to UCLA the eventual NCAA champion that year. That's the best MAC finish I could find.......

You got it...Rob Buck's WMU teams were legit. They might have been one of the best four in the country that year but drew UCLA during UCLA's domination period. Talk about being old, I remember this NCAA like it was yesterday...haha

"I am anxious to see if Dave Boos at Ball State can take his team to the level of OU. It appears that he has the coaching creds to do it. The team that amazes me is Miami U-they have a hotbed of talent in Cincinnati and a great school to recruit to-every bit as good as OU, if not better. And year after year they are in the middle of the pack in the MAC. "
Miami of OH has a great pool of talent bubbling up every year in Cincinnati's GGCL league. For what ever reason, they seem to recruit 5'8 or 5'9 hitters from obscure B & C club teams, instead of going after the 6' plus bangers that come out of the area. Great academic school to boot !

Just curious what coaching credentials you are talking about? He doesn't have any track record of a head coach.
