Here you go Beachman .. Now THIS is a pathetic schedule for a program that expects to be among the elite. The best team on this out of conference schedule is LBSU ... and that's nothing to talk about.
Sorry Huskies, but it's the truth.

Is there a poll for easiest out of conference schedule by champion hopeful? Haven't seen all the others but this is a contender. Normal Washington pre-conference schedule (which has worked), and the first 6 Pac 10 contests should be against 6-10 in the conference rankings. Saw Washington just destroy Cal and Stanford right after a pre-conference schedule like this last year; best I saw them play all year. Maybe Washington will start to peak at Cal and Stanford in early October, instead of three weeks earlier. Or not.

They have the Pac 10, so they'll always have a tough schedule. Since they're working in a new setter and building her confidence, they could probably use some easy matches early on.

I am willing to make a bet that one of those first 6 teams will beat them.

I am willing to make a bet that one of those first 6 teams will beat them. No way. Fresno State, San Francisco, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Boise State and Morgan State are not beating the Huskies, even with a new setter. For that matter, the only scary thing in the first 17 is that Oregon, WSU and Cal are all on the road.

Not one of those 6, I meant one of the first 6 Pac-10 games.

They are among the nations elite. For the past 3 years people have been saying their schedule is too "light" for a team that "expects" to compete or beat the best. Much to everyone's suprise they defeat the nations best, have won the pac-10 title, have been to 3 final fours and have 1 national championship. All season (conference) long they play the nations best. Why "have to" load up and beat your team to death. Heck, they've only lost 9 matches in the last 3 years and this playing in the toughest conference.

To be numbered among the national elite as they were in 2004 and 2005 and (to a degree) in 2006, the Huskies need some top-eight road or neutral court wins. Since this season's non-conference schedule will contribute nothing toward that goal, going 0-3 at Stanford, UCLA and USC would leave the Huskies short. If they don't defend their home court as tenaciously as they have the past few seasons, even going 1-2 at Stanford, UCLA and USC might leave them short.

Leave them short of what? The only games that matter for the top 10 teams in the nation are the games in the tournament. They'll be in the tournament, so as long as they are playing well at the end of the season what does it matter who they play at the beginning of the year?

It is to NO ONE's surprise that the Huskies made it into the Final Four the last three years. They've had the talent, cohesiveness, and leadership to do so ~ not to mention a VERY favorable home court advantage during the NCAAs. Last year, Washington shouldn't have been in the Final Four. They simply lucked out by hosting a regional. The Huskies did not win ONE match of note on the road last year. Are they good? Most certainly! But, put them on ANY of the other Regional courts and they do not advance to the Final Four .. my opinion of course. The last three years have been about a great group of young ladies that played together for awhile and were held together by an incredibly good setter. We'll see how this preseason schedule prepares them for Pac-10 play. If your belief is that they do not need a tough preseason because they always have the Pac-10, then so be it. I'm sure many would agree with you. However, this doesn't change the fact that it is a pathetically weak preseason schedule ~ and that was the point of my initial post.

Last year, they at least had matches against Ohio and Texas in Madison to start the season. Only the match against Long Beach might push them in this non-conference schedule. I guess McLaughlin plays a schedule like this every year and still has success in the conference and NCAAs, though, so he must know what he is doing. I would hate to be the director of operations there, though. Seattle to Jacksonville probably isn't the easiest trip. Of course, I think they have also been to DeKalb, Illinois, Davidson, and Fargo in recent seasons, so they do tend to see some out of the way places.

I think Washington will have a goal of being in the Final Four again -- kind of like last year's goal of repeating as champions. They set challenging goals for themselves. If this one fan's opinion counts for anything though, they don't need to be dominating this year. They're overdue for a rebuilding year. After losing five seniors, last year should have been a rebuilding year -- and look what happened!
As for the schedule, I think it's part of their whole approach. In the preseason we mostly hear the players talk about meeting their standards and taking care of things on their side of the net. I don't entirely follow how playing a soft schedule helps with that, but after seeing it for the past few years I'm sure that it must.
So it's fine with me if they don't make the nation sit up and take notice from week one. If they can play together, take care of things on their side of the court, and give us a few good matches to watch, I'll be happy.
