www.presstelegram.com/sports/ci_6569037Eight lettermen return for L.B. State 49ers, picked No. 2 in the Big West, open season Aug. 24. By Frank Burlison, Staff writer LONG BEACH - Coach Brian Gimmillaro will put his 23rd Long Beach State women's volleyball team through a double workout today during the opening of practice for the 2007 season that gets underway for the 49ers when they play host to the University of San Diego on Aug. 24. Eight lettermen, including all-Big West Conference selections in senior middle blockers Alexis Crimes (the conference's Player of the Year last season) and Michaela Hasalikova, and junior setter Nicole Vargas, will be among the 15 players expected today. In a poll among the conference's head coaches, the 49ers were projected to finish second behind defending champion Cal Poly. They were 26-6 last season, including 12-2 in conference, where they lost only to the champion Mustangs, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they were eliminated by Hawaii. Among the other returnees are defensive specialists in seniors Cynthia Buggs and Talaya Whitfield (both Poly High graduates); outside hitters Naomi Washington and Quincy Verdin; setter-outsider hitter Dyanne Lawlor and defensive specialist Sarah Hudson. Libero Iris Murray is expected to miss the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the spring.

All I have to do is post a few magic words on this forum and Beachman will appear. Oh, it's true. The phenomenon has been tested and verified.

No beachman has not died. He's taking a break. That's what he's telling me. Cal Poly was selected the #1 team. But we will see.

The Gators are headed out to CA to play L.B. State over Thanksgiving for hopefully what should be a good tuneup before Regionals.

Cal Poly is deserving of that top spot. Why does everyone refer to Alexis Crimes as the 2006 Big West Player of the Year, wasn't Atherstone Co-Player of the year? Atherstone should have been the outright BWC Player of the Year.
Anyway, anxious to see Atherstone, Houston, and Rivera in action!!!

Just looking at their roster, Cal Poly will be very physical at the net this year.
LBSU returns Crimes and Hasalikova. But I think everyone is anxious to see a possible Vargas sisters showdown this year. UCSB vs. LBSU always fun to watch........every year.

For all of beachman's whining about other programs having pro's, I don't have the heart to tell him that there is undebateable solid evidence to the fact that their Czech player has played on the same club team in Brno with players who were getting paid. The source is first-hand, and those with the information are waiting for the right time to bring it out. Frankly, I don't care much about the west-coast teams, but it is ironic that Beachman is doing the griping and his own program may be guilty of it for a second time in just a few years!

It seems that the NCAA doesn't really care... in women's sports.
Look at Washington, USC, Missouri, Louisville, and a bunch of DII teams. Lots of violations in just a few recent years... but nothing being said or done.

Maybe that is why he is keeping a low profile!

When is LBSU going to be good again? They haven't seemed to be picking up any top recruits. I was really disappointed in them in the one time I saw them last season (against Hawaii in the 2nd round). This isn't an intentional slam on them. I miss seeing super athletic fast offense 49er teams of the past.

Maybe today's top recruits no longer want to play for a taskmaster that has a short man's Napoleon complex.
