Okay, I know the 2007 season hasen't even started, but reading the postings here and starbulletin's blogs, I started to think about the whole "who's redshirting" this year. But, I was thinking of next year.
If Ferrel redshirts this year, Hawaii will have it's entire outside hitters returning: Houston/Hittle/Otineru/Keefe/Ferrel. Where does that leave Herring? Will Hawaii be able to afford to redshirt Herring? Is that simply out of the question because she is so good?

She won't be though, the " experts" that make those rankings think she is to short.

The said the same about Misty May. She ended up a 2-time AVCA National Player of the Year. I would like to agree with you, but she is just too dynamic of a player not to. She is 5-10, excellent backrow skills, and can jump out of the gym. She has no equal this year in my eyes. Murrey would be a close second but does not have the overall skills.

She won't be though, the " experts" that make those rankings think she is to short. It's funny how everyone started to talk about physical aspects of volleyball players "big, athletic, jumps out of the gym, hits a heavy ball". As Hawaii has shown in 2006, if you can't pass, doesn't matter if a chick is 7', she'll have 2 blockers on her. If Herring is as good as everyone says, then height should not be a problem. Of Herring, Oceanic cable has some Kamehameha games of 2006 for .99c on sports on demand..has anyone watched them? Anyone can tell me which games Herring took control of a match.

Her performance on the U.S. Junior National team was incredible. She and Murrey were the go to hitters for the U.S.

i think ferrel will redshirt. she is a dynamic attacker, but i dont think her overall ball handling skills and volleyball iq are quite up to par yet. there is a chance that amanda simmons might redshirt as well. if the middles for hawaii (sanders and gregory) can perform well throughout the season and simmons is not needed then i think shoji would really like to save a year of eligibility for her. shes got tremendous potential.
i agree with the rest of you guys in saying that herring is too good to be redshirted next year. but its a possibility. i dont think keefe is at the same level as houston, hittle, otineru, and herring. ferrel may need another year of polishing. so i would say hawaiis got a nice problem of too much depth on the outside. competition is good, but you also want that complete top gun outside hitter as well......

Murrey would be a close second but does not have the overall skills. And yet, when they were on the same team for the Youth World Championships, Murrey had more kills than Herring, a slightly higher hitting percentage, and more blocks. (All according to the player stats on the FIVB web site.) Herring did pass better and dig better, but I think you could make a case for ranking Herring behind Murrey. That said, she sounds like a tremendous player.

Murrey is the real deal as well. I hope she signs with UCLA. Just so I could see Murrey VS. Herring for four years.

You might want to add Kaufman to the mix as well, since she battling for the rightside.
Let's put it this way ... whether or not Herring redshirts her first year will not be indicative of how much she will be needed in 2008. Houston, Hittle, and Keefe graduate ... leaving Ferrell, Kaufman, Otineru, and Herring. A nice, dynamic bunch IMO. But I really think it will be Kaufman and Ferrell battling for the rightside and not Herring.

Maybe Keefe will move to middle?

Regarding Herrings passing skills...note that in the 2006 NORCECA 18 and under Girls's Volleyball tournament Herring received the award for being the top receiver. Yogi won the top libero award and Murrey the top spiker award. It is hard to say who is better, Herring or Murrey, based on their international experiences. Herring is a better all-around player, certainly better in the back row. Murrey probably has the edge in hitting and blocking, but only a slight edge. I haven't seen Murrey play but I have seen Herring several times. She was in her way just as impressive as Alex Klineman, who I saw last year. Herring jumps higher and is more athletic than Klineman, but the latter being 6'5" sure makes a large difference. By the way, Herring is listed as 5'11.' Both Kim Willoughby and Stacey Gordon were both under 6' and you know how successful they were.
