Stats are up. So Keefe and Ferrell also played. How long were they in for? And Gregory only got 15 sets in five games? Keefe was in for one or two rotations to put up a big block on the right...don't think Ferrell played, but I was so distraught I could have missed it. I think we need to lighten up a bit on Houston. She DEFINITELY had a very bad night. But she has proven herself to be invaluable in the past and will again. Hopefully very, very soon.

I agree about Houston. She has proven herself in the past. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time she's had a really bad night. She'll bounce back.

"I think we need to lighten up a bit on Houston."
She has a bad habit of talking trash to other teams. No sympathy here.

I need to see the Brandt/Houston connection before I make any judgements.
I do have to say, this is why I don't champion the "big banger" types. The set has to be perfect or they are ineffective, they become a liability & they don't have much else to offer.

One comment on Mafua and the constant refrain that she "trained under Kamana'o": what a load of crap. I never quite understood this phrase. The suggestion is that since Mafua played behind a great setter, she got to observe her brilliance and learend from her so that she could play like her. Well, I watched Kamana'o for 4 years and believe me, I ain't Kamana'o. And neither is Mafua. And all those QBs who played under Dan Marino, including Damon Huard? They're not Dan Marino. Curtis Hunter played behind Michael Jordan at UNC. Who's Curtis Hunter? Yeah, that's right.
From here on out, I don't want any mention of this "trained under Kamana'o" crap. It doesn't mean a thing.

It's hard to believe Aneli is playing for the Wahine. I keep thinking, to this day, she's going to commit to USC as soon as she graduates from College of Southern Idaho.
She's a fantastic player, but based on this match against Michigan, I suspect she's going to have difficulty with the big blocks.

Only 5,900+ fans at the SSC? What's up with that?

This is why I am holding out for a Brandt/Houston connection. Otineru would be better at L2, passing and playing defense when Houston is in front (like at CSI whe she was the L2 behind Asia Kaczor).......but I think everyone agrees after last night that Hawaii needs Otineru on the floor as a starter, playing all the way around.

The Wahine came out really flat and played flat for almost 2 entire games. The fans were flat too, well for most of the match anyway. I think an hour and a half gametime delay from the projected start of the match could have been an issue, mostly for the fans
Surprisingly Jamie Houston was a non factor, which is ironic considering Houston is Hawaii's best kill option.
Brandt and Otineru really need to be on the court for Hawai'i... they really provided a spark to this team.
Hawaii's passing was definitely better than it was at this time last year.
The Wolverines were steady, they have a talented young setter. They weren't flashy last night but effective. They scored a ton of points on basically the same play, which was kind of annoying.
The Wahine (aside from Otineru) struggled to put the ball down in the latter part of the 5th game. Houston could have made a difference here but oh well, you live and learn.
Overall an entertaining latter 3 games of the match ., It seemed like Michigan just wanted it more than Hawai'i did last night. Having a team like Michigan come in and beat the Wahine on their homecourt was definitely unthinkable in years past. Dave needs to pick a line up and stick with it so the players can gel. This will be a very good Hawai'i team come mid season.

When the game was on the line, Hawaii could not find a terminator. At the end of the last season, Houston played that role brilliantly. Don't know what happened to her last night...probably the worst game of her career, one kill, seven errors and hitting -.333%. Hittle does not have the firepower for that role; she still has not reached her freshman level of play. Otineru sometimes can play that role but not on a consistent basis; as someone mentioned above, she is vulnerable to a big block, despite her power hitting.

After watching Oregon State and Colorado State go 5 then Michigan vs Hawai'i go 5 I knew this was going to be an exciting weekend and Shoji couldn't have done a better job in choosing these teams for the enjoyment of our fans.As usual the class of the REAL Wahine fans showed when they gave OSU and CSU a standing O after their match.
Losing to an impressive Michgan team from the Big 10 in another 5 game thriller is not something to hang your head over.Just grateful that we're not playing Albany,Northern Arizona and UC Davis in the Hilton Garden Inn tournament in Northern Arizona.
In the house last night I seen from the US National Team Robyn Ah Mow-Santos,Lindsey Berg, and Tayyiba Haneef-Park,man that is one tall girl.
Looking forward to tonight and another plate lunch served on elegant styrofoam china.

Hawaii couldn't find a terminator OUT OF THE GATE. Things didn't pick up until the personel change in game 3 and even though Hawaii lost, they had to fight back from a 0-2 deficit. I think they did a great job, esp. Brandt and her connecting to the middles and of course...OTINERU...but I've already said enuff about that!

I agree with BIK, Shoji needs to pick a line-up and have them gel. I mean, the team didn't practice together until Thursday, but I'll check with cindyluis on her blog. If I remember correctly, she mentioned that Mafua and Lee was named the starters on wednesday night giving them only thursday to practice together.
To Shoji's credit, maybe what the girls did in practice doesn't reflect their game play, but when he mentions "she needs to be on the court somewhere" which was said of both Brandt and Otineru, it's kind of stupid he doesn't start any of them.

but when he mentions "she needs to be on the court somewhere" which was said of both Brandt and Otineru, it's kind of stupid he doesn't start any of them. EXACTLY what I was saying. It's been Shoji's habbit two stick with the "norm" and even when new players such as Kahumoku, Willoughby, Mason, Otineru, or Brandt may be "better" why change the "norm." Otineru's entrance reminded me of Kahumoku's her freshman year when she replaced Illustre?? It was a ... "why the hell was she not starting in the first place?"
