The team is obviously still a work in progress. Time will tell if they can or will get better. Having inexperience at setter is like putting in a new Quarterback. And while this has been discussed before, here's some food for thought from the St.Mary's-Arizona game in which St. Mary's beat the Wildcats at home on Saturday: Freshman setter Kapua Kamana'o also recorded a double-double, with 63 assists and 14 digs. Too late to cry about who we have. Let's cheer them on and hope they develop into better players....fast.

Too late to cry about who we have. Oh, I beg to differ. It's never too late to cry about anything. Whining and crying are very sporty here in VolleyTalk land. And accepted.

We can only hope this team turns around like the Minnesota team of 2003 -- crap-ass start to the season but eventual Final Four participant.

12. Let Cayley Thurlby play. This one was SO brilliant! ;D Was it just me, or was it easy to tell that the K5 crowd microphone was in the general vicinity of the Oregon State bench or more specifically near the Camilla Ah-Hoy/Laie/Kahuku cheering section? BTW, does anyone know whether or not Mona Ah-Hoy is still coaching the Kahuku volleyball team?

Oh, this one's easy ... 1. BiK
2. BiK
3. BiK
4. Fans who think that DS is a god, and then think that they're smarter than he is. I don't pretend to think that I'm half as anything as Mike Jordan, not his coaching skills and certainly not his circumference. I asked MJ last year why we don't see more jump serves at NMSU. His answer: unless the serve comes in with some "weight", it's a useless waste of a player's energy. I think he means that the jump serve has to generate an overpass or a shank.
5. Anyone consider that maybe the PLAYERS like the uni's looser?
6. Ti leaves. What a weanie plant! Goatheads (aka puncturevine), now that'll put some hop in your step! A Ti leaf looks like something I'd use when I run out of TP.
7. BiK
5.

Thanks Wolfgang!! ;D 2. Whether DS is an old fashion guy or not......I still and probably will NEVER understand why ALL the girls either jump float serve, or what I call a "tap it over" serve. I can't understand it one bit especially when you consider the fact that most teams eat the serve up and slam it to the floor. And I bring it up because I get all nuts when they tap the damn ball over or do their quirky jump float and it sails long or into the Net. AND THAT HAPPENS A LOT.....AND AGAIN....THEY NOT EVEN JUMP SERVING!! I mean if that is going to happen and it frequently does.........I would rather let them rip at the ball and if it sails long or in the net and not be so bothered.......THAN them standing at the end line tapping it over and it flying past the opponent and out. As I see it, Serving should be an opportunity to get the opponent out of sync or create bad passing to help UH and its front line. So I just DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LOGIC in that and never will. I respect DS....... IMO he has to make his team practice more jump serving and not be almost one-dimensional when it comes to the service line. PLEASE DAVE!!! ;D I like the comment in bold. I watched the 05 UTK - Mizzou match recently, and the announcer was obbsessed with service errors, and going on and on about her 7 rules of serving, and eventually say "just hit it anywhere in the box at all." As much as that feels more successful than a service error, there is no actual difference between a service error and "the other team gets off a perfect pass, and then gets an easy kill." This is especially relevant if you team is not doing a great job blocking (like mizzou in that match). Allthough as for the non jump serving, not allnon power jump serves are poor. Our most effective server last year (annie sadowski) just seemed to "tap it over the net," yet for whatever reason (spin, placement?), it was very successful. OOC, when was the last time hawaii got swept at home? Yeah.....I understand where you are coming from. I am just so frustrated to see the ball continously go into the net or sail out of bounds and they are just STANDING there!!! Nothing fancy, nothing hard about it........and it SAILS over the opponents side!!! And another fact is that absolutely NO ONE does a jump serve. Not even ONE wahine.........and that is only being one-dimensional in my book. They need to create a palethra of other serves so it takes the opponent OFF their game. And an example of that was OSU's Roukes Powerful Jump serve that really gave Hawaii fits at times. I also understand that the jump float or "quickry" serves can be very effective......and Stephy Brandt's is an example of it......but with all the serving Errors......needs to be a change......or at least different looks at serving.

A Ti leaf looks like something I'd use when I run out of TP. 7. BiK 5. 4. Well in my case I NEVER thought of DS as a God but only as a good coach. With that said........Hawaii fans are known around the country for being so "knowledgeable" and WE know EXACTLY what could be and indeed needs to be fixed. Will it be easy? Of course Not? But could it be fixed and shouldn't it have been fixed from last year? OH Hell Yeah!!! The reason why we rant on this thread is because we so desperately want our team to go back to their WINNING ways and traditions. 5. Actually if you look through out the past UH years.......basically ALL the teams wore loose fitted Uni's with the one exception of the Willoughby,Kahumoku years. DS still I believe has the final say.......and he I think prefers it to tighter ones. 6. Ti leaves is a staple of everything that is HAWAI'I. It is unique, brings good luck, nourishes our body........and is not a Weanie plant. We wave it as a show of luck but more so a symbol of our love, commitment, and Pride to be from those beautiful Islands out in the deep blue Pacific. The ti leaf can be found on our State seal.......and for good reason.

im not gonna bash on hawaii because this is kinda getting out of hand. we were the ones pumping up hawaii and thats the only reason why we're so disappointed rite now. we have such big expectations and its possible for them to meet those expectations, but we shouldnt be so hard on the team.

"come mid season" Hawaii will APPEAR to be a much better team, because they will be playing much weaker teams. Hawaii is a good team, they just aren't a great team. They have some kids coming in that can restore some order to the Wahine faithful. This team however, is a top 25 team. It is a testament to the greatness of Hawaii volleyball, that top 25 won't be good enough.

hawaii's best players are dave shoji and mike sealy. by years end theyll have this team playing well. this wkend negated the coaches because there was barely any tape for them to scout.
the middles are hawaiis most effective attackers, but hawaiis passing doesnt allow the setters to run the middles how they should. whenever hawaii gets a good pass theyre obligated to finally set their middles and that makes them less effective because the other team knows its going to them too.
jamie houston has to get back to top form or hawaii's got no chance at getting to a sweet sixteen.
if tara hittle is the captain shes got to find a way to lead more effectively.
and the bottom line is that the players need to start being more consistent. seven people need to step up and grab their starting positions so that the team can start working and improving. otherwise itll be another one of those years that dave shoji'll have to mix and match his players every match and find the combination thatll work that night to get a five game victory.

I just love watching last years Regional Semifinals... 15 - 5 in the 5th game... Mick Haley with no other words to say... Jayme Lee digging Asia Kaczor's attacks... yes.. it brings a smile back to my face too!

I'm not too worried about Hawaii. I've pegged somewhere between top 10-15.....I think they are playing as I have expected. Kamana'o left big shoes to fill. Hopefully time will give them the opportunity to shore up a few shortcomings and I'm sure we'll see a whole different team come NCAA's.

I have to believe that both Louisville and K-State are better than OSU. If Hawaii should lose both (doubt it, but possible) their schedule may not allow them to climb the polls. Their conference schedule won't help, and only a win at Nebraska would allow them to climb. Granted teams in the top 25 could bottom out, but on their own, the schedule doesn't have teams on it that can catapult them.

10 Things I Must Get Out Of My System 1. Am I the only one who doesn't care for Aneli Cubi-Otineru No denying her volleyball skills - but I don't like the way she carries herself. I think some people on this forum have created TOO much hype over her - she is nothing special. 2. Dani Mafua is overrated. Brandt has better composure and leadership qualities of a setter. 3. Jamie Houston is putting too much pressure on herself. Dave & Co. have got to reassure her that her team mates WILL help her out. She doesn't have to score everytime she hits. If the set isn't there, hell, just TAP the ball over. I think she carries the most burden on this team 4. I don't care about Hawaii's serving - it's not very good. PERIOD. 5.I do care about their inability to put down the ball in transition on offense. So much hitters and no output. It's really sad 6. Dave & Co. need to recruit a hitter(s) out of the PAC-10 with good volleyball skills, experience, and height. (cough *Prince* cough *Mason* cough) 7. Jayme Lee at libero. Liz Kaaihue at defensive specialist. 8. I feel for the seniors Gregory and Sanders. They are trying their best but a middle just can't take over a match. 9. Let's all look forward to next year when these girls TRULLY understand how tough and competitive Division 1 ball is. They will get their dose of reality checks this season. Come 2008, they will be toughened up and ready for anything that is thrown their way. 10. And most importantly - Let's Go Bows
