Stanford sweeps the hapless Delaware State Hornets 30-9, 30-12, 30-12. The first game had a brutal 15-point run with Barboza winning 14 consecutive points on serve. If I recall correctly, Stanford pinned an even longer run on the Sac State Hornets in a first-round NCAA tournament match [it was in 2002, with Lindsey Yamasaki winning 19 consecutive points on serve in a 30-8 blowout in Game 2 of a three-game sweep]. Must be the name...
Evans set the entire match... the first time ever for her. Rebecca Harlow said that "the youngsters [got] some good experience".

Big deal, is this even worth mentioning, they could have played North Hollywood High School and had the same result. Yippee!

Penn State beats Yale 30-14, 30-14, 30-20. They let Yale play them even in the first half of the 1st and 2nd games and then played even in the 3rd until 19-17 PSU. Many errors in 3rd for PSU. Bandbox arena. Referrees warning on over zealous Yale rowing team. I think Penn State/Stanford could have found a better setting for a #2 vs #3 match.
Announcer couldn't even remember who the home team (Yale) was and kept calling PSU Penn. Also, it was the PSU Nattany Lions. Color person thought Yale was the better team. They have beaten one third of the New England states - Maine and Rhode Island - and Sacred Heart. Their points were off of PSU errors. That is another story, too many shanked passes. The thread on Stanford vs PSU is probably on the mark. Ball control will make the difference.

That's tomorrow night. Stanford and Penn State would only agree to meet on neutral ground and this tournament in New Haven was it. Penn State just started their match against Yale, whom Stanford plays tomorrow morning at 10:00 EDT. Penn State follows against Delaware State at 12:00 noon. Yale and Delaware State kick off the evening action at 5:00 PM EDT and Stanford-Penn State is the nightcap at 7:00 PM EDT. I don't understand why Stanford wouldn't want to meet PSU in Happy Valley -- that would build character, or was PSU afraid of being beat at home? What am I missing here?

PSU went to Stanford in 2004 and beat them in 5 games. Stanford only agreed to a rematch on neutral ground.

PSU went to Stanford in 2004 and beat them in 5 games. Stanford only agreed to a rematch on neutral ground. That doesn't make any sense. Stanford has a veteran team (sort of like PSU in 2004), so unless there is something really funky about PSU's gym, then why avoid them?

PSU went to Stanford in 2004 and beat them in 5 games. Stanford only agreed to a rematch on neutral ground. It will be the second rematch on neutral ground... the first was in 2005 at the AVCA/NACWAA Showcase at the Qwest Center in Omaha, a five game Stanford win. I don't think anyone outside those two programs knows anything beyond both teams wanting to play each other... after all, if one didn't, it wouldn't have happened.

Announcer couldn't even remember who the home team (Yale) was and kept calling PSU Penn. According to YaleBulldogs.com, a Yale assistant coach will do play-by-play for the Stanford-PSU video feed.

The first part is demonstrably true. I originally said Stanford wasn't going to play in Happy Valley, not that they wouldn't... I was describing the outcome, not speculating about the process. Yes, and I'm saying "Stanford only agreed to a rematch on neutral ground" is not true.

I should have said "Stanford and Penn State did only agree to meet on neutral ground". Mea culpa! Mea maxima culpa!
P.S. How do you know that Stanford would have agreed to meet under other circumstances... or perhaps more to the point, is there some sort of unwritten code that those who are not volleyball insiders are subject to harassment by those who are? That kind of pettiness is a good way to drive people away from volleyball, not toward it.
