Women’s Volleyball Loses 3-1 at Indiana
Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer has a team-high 17.5 points against the Hoosiers
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (7-6 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-19, 30-18, 25-30, 30-20) decision at Indiana (11-5, 2-2) Saturday night in University Gym. Buckeye Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) posted a team-high 17.5 points in the loss while Hoosier Erica Short had a match-high 30 points for Indiana. Meyer collected 15 kills, an ace serve and three assist blocks while Short recorded 27 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks.
Indiana opened game one with the first four points and never trailed in the game. The Hoosiers reached game point at 29-18 with an OSU error. A Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill stopped the first game point at 29-19 but a Short kill ended the game at 30-19. The Hoosiers hit .343 for the game to .081 for Ohio State.
The Hoosiers took a 3-0 lead in game one and held a 6-4 margin before a kill and ace serve from Meyer tied the game at six. Three straight kills from Lauren Ditteon gave Indiana a 9-6 lead. The Hoosiers would hold the lead winning the game, 30-18, with a Mara Hilgenberg kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Indiana hit .417 for the game to .111 for the Buckeyes.
Game three saw seven lead changes and 13 ties with the last tie coming at 17-all. Two McCarthy kills and an Indiana error opened a 20-17 lead. At 22-19, a Meyer-McCarthy block and a Hoosier error took the Buckeye lead to five at 24-19. Leading 28-24, an Ohio State kill from Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) set game point. A Ditteon kill stopped the game point at 29-25. Ohio State won game three, 30-25, with an Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) kill to cut Indiana’s lead in the match to 2-1. The Buckeyes hit .256 for the game to .128 for the Hoosiers.
Tied at one in game four, a Buckeye error, a Short kill and a Short-Taylor Wittmer block gave Indiana a 4-1 lead. The Hoosiers would expand the lead to as many as 13 before reaching match point at 29-19 with a Short kill. A McCarthy kill stopped the first match point at 29-20. A Short kill ended the game at 30-20 for Indiana, giving them a 3-1 win in the match. The Hoosiers hit .464 for the game to .057 for the Buckeyes.
For the match, Indiana hit .315 to .130 for the Buckeyes. The Hoosiers had a 70-44 margin in kills and a nine-to-five advantage in ace serves. Indiana gave up nine service errors to six for the Buckeyes. Defensively, the Hoosiers had a 55-46 margin in digs. Indiana’s Juli Pierce had a match-high 17 digs for the Hoosiers. At the net, Indiana enjoyed an 11.5 to nine margin in team blocks. IU’s Ashley Benson (one solo and five assists) and OSU’s Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) (six assist blocks) shared match-high honors with six total blocks each. Indiana’s Hilgenberg posted a match-high 60 assists in the contest. Buckeye Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) recorded 30 assists for Ohio State.
Ohio State returns home next week to face 12th-ranked Minnesota Friday at 6 p.m. The match will be carried live by the Big Ten Network. The Buckeyes then host Iowa Saturday at 7 p.m.
