I was looking at Oregon State's roster today, and I must say with 3 wins over #7 UCLA, #11 Hawaii, and #21 Colorado State, with the UCLA and Hawaii matches played at their respective houses. OSU may be pretty damn good the next two years, ESPECIALLY 2009.
They start (I think) 1 senior, 1 freshman, and 4 sophmores and the rest of the roster is young. I think they will make it pretty damn deep in the tournament in 2009. Is Taras finally turning that program around o what?
Any thoughts? Any Beaver fans out there?

Sounds like it. Taras also hinted that he has a top player coming in the next year or two.

Sounds like it. Taras also hinted that he has a top player coming in the next year or two. They have Megan MacBride from Auburn Mountainview (Auburn, WA) coming in 2009. She was a member of Prep VB's Frosh 59 and Sophomore 79 lists and will likely be at least a Top 20 Junior Recruit when that list comes out. She was 1st team All State (as a Sophomore) as a Setter and 2nd team All State as a Hitter.

^Damn really? She was one of the juniors that I was hoping the Huskies would get, she's a lefty too... and easily over 6' tall. Hopefully we get the Munoz kid from that class at least. And the 6'5" sophmore MB from Mead in the 2010 class, that girl is going to be soooooo good, can't remember her name right now.
There is so much amazing talent coming out of Washington the next few years, the Huskies now have quite a hotbed to work with.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, so back to Oregon State, great pickup with McBride. I bet she's a top 10 Senior Aces next year.

When I saw Oregon State play Hawaii, there were only two players that made a big impression on me. Rachel Rourke, the Aussie, is big, tall, and powerful, albeit on the slow side. She is a sophomore and hits hard. The other hitter that did well was the freshman, Jill Sawatzsky, an outside hitter. I understand the Hawaii girl, Camilla Ah-Choy, a setter. did exceptionally well against UCLA. It is hard to be a competitive team in the Pac 10 with only two outside hitters that can score consistently. The blockers will stack against them. Oregon State needs to recruit a strong middle attacker or another strong hitter to move up to the middle of the pack in the next year or two. Or the other sophomores have to improve tremendously.

And they are improving tremendously. Hitting percentages for the Oregon State middles have improved greatly over last season.
Their stats match up quite favorably to those of the middles in a top-ranked team like oh, say... Hawaii. Sanders leads the pack, but she is a senior, after all.
Consistency. That's what Oregon State has to achieve.

Has Ah Hoy replaced Walsh as the starting setter?

^They run a weird 6-2. Walsh gets most of the time though. Ah Hoy comes in at a certain time, I don't know how to explain it, but she plays every game.
I'm guessing McBride is going there as a RS, she's way too talented to only be on the court half the time, unless they switch to 5-1 when she gets there?

She plays RS while in the front row and S while in the back row. As I said, she was All-State in both as a Soph. I don't see why OSU would not want her to continue to do that. A lefty RS with power and a 6'+ S. What more could you ask for?

Didn't Ashley Engle try that this year? and had to go back to playing just RS?

Having watched OSU twice this year I can say that they definitely do not run a weird 6-2 (at least in those two matches). It is either Walsh or (lately) Ahhoy who set in a 5-1. I must admit that I did see Ahhoy enter thye court when Walsh was on and play a defensive role as opposed to a setting role. Looking at their roster they have Ahhoy as a soph so she will be around for McBrides first year which will be an easier transition for McBride, and I agree with everyone else, McBride CAN play.

Didn't Ashley Engle try that this year? and had to go back to playing just RS? Well, to be fair to Engle, she was still recovering from an ankle injury she suffered from the summer. She did a 6-2 with Michelle Moriarty before she sat out a handful of games. Since she has come to the court, Moriarty has run a 5-1. Engle probably hasn't gotten the necessary reps to be an effective setter at this point of the season.

Saki is correct. Engle's 6-2 games were motivated more out of concern for her rehab than for a commitment to running both setters. In many of those, they actually subbed her out when she rotated to front row so she would be jumping at the net as little as possible.
