Students should be free to be homers in the school newspaper. While I laughed with everyone else, the article didn't bother me at all. I think (hope) every student newspaper is full of homers; they can be fans just like us. I disagree. I don’t mind a bit of team favoritism by a writer in a student newspaper, but this takes it beyond supporting your team. He makes some valid points about the teams ranked above Long Beach State but the tone of the article and the expectations turn me off. Following the logic of the writer, it should be expected that every voting coach in the nation to follow what players are injured and what players are healthy. Also, it is a little strange to hear that Washington is fifth on the team in kills when you have 5 potential hitters on the court. The strangest thing to me is that he is bashing the AVCA to which Gimmillaro is a voting member for the poll.

Why do so many people on this board hate on BG so much? I really don't get it, he is a really great guy who knows a ton about this game and is very passionate about helping his players achieve at the highest level they can on and off the court...I just don't understand why people love to bash him, please enlighten me

I remember back in 1996 when Minnesota was sent to Long Beach to play LBSU and reverse compared to the poted article came out of various sources including one of the predecessors of VT with statements like "We're LBSU and we don't worry about teams that struggle trying to consistently get ranked".
The shoe seems to be on the other foot (so to speak) for in recent years.

Prove which part? That he's a great guy or he knows a lot about volleyball? I mean have you ever met the man/talked to him??? If you've ever had a conversation with him you'd know that all the bashing on here is very misguided...do you really need me to try and prove that he knows a lot about this game? I think his record and Olympians speak for themselves...

I was at a coaching clinic that he participated and he was by far the least prepared coach I've even seen at a coaching clinic. It seemed that he only wanted to talk about himself and his legacy. I had previously purchased at least 4 of his training videos and liked many of his training ideas, hower, he didn't appear to even try to work things out ahead of time with the clinic organizers ahead of time to have local players available for him to use for demontrating his ideas and drills. He was fresh off of LBSU's championship in the 1998 championship over PSU in Madison and the clinic was in March of 1999. He just didn't seem to care enough to take the time to prepare a presentation for the hundreds of people that chose his session to attend. I thought LBSU had a chance to win the 2001 championship even after losing the first game if he had made more adjustments to get better matchups with Stanford, however, he just seemed to do the same things in every game and got swept. I was actually "cheering" for Stanford in that match. Shaw and Dunning are / were excellent coaches both friendly and gracious (along with their teams) I even fel sorry for Don Shaw in the 1980s when he was given the labels like "the winningest coach that's never won a championship so I was very happy for him and Stanford when they won that first championsip. Unfortunately, the just won't stop winning championships so "more teams can share the wealth".

I think a lot of dislike for Long Beach and BG stems from the posts that Beachman had done on Volleytalk in the past. All of you should be aware that most of Beachmans comments were not the same feelings of the Boosters, the team or BG. He has and will always be a perssimist.

The real message in all that whining is that they don't have enough depth to go very deep into the post-season. The team that the Aggies took to 18-16 in game 5 wasn't a top 25 team.
Besides, the blizzard of yellow cards they got made them look like pretty poor sports. The coach didn't show to advantage with a pretty mellow officiating crew.

All of you should be aware that most of Beachmans comments were not the same feelings of the Boosters, the team or BG. He has and will always be a perssimist. That could account for some things. It doesn't account for his lack of being prepared for the coaching clinic I attended. He didn't have anything prepared by way of handouts that could have been given to the clinic coordinators to be copied and handed out to the hundreds of people attending his session. He had no presentation ready to either be shown from clips of his training tapes or live demonstrations where he could show a local team what his drills and such are while explaining their intended purpose to the attendees. All he did / wanted to due was talk about his national championship team and himself. Hopefully he prepares and works better at his own personal clinics. His session was a waste of time since he actually has some very good general ideas, drills and training ideas based on viewing at least 4 of his training videos. Numerous other coaches have giving similar length sessions with very good ideas, good presentation and entertaining at the same time. A few of favorites from one various years of the clinic were Tarry Lyskevich, Kathy DeBoer (now with the AVCA), and Cindy Book (a local DII coach) with 3 totally different types of presentation but 3 very high quality informative and entertaining presentations with a bit of humor thrown into Terry's and Kathy's presentations. Plus, all 3 were interesting to talk with after their presentations. I still have Terry's presentation materials as well a folder of training goals and general training plans for the US team he would be taking to the Olympics that summer. He brought that as a "door prize" that I won and he kindly autographed and stuck around to talk a while longer with me and a plethora of others. While Brian was willing to talk a bit after his session his mannerisms seemed to show that he'd rather get out of there as quickly as possible and AFAIK he didn't stick around much after his session. Perhaps Brian is just shy at heart when he's on the road like that. If I saw that he was doing another session at one of the local or in one of the neighboring states I'd give strong consideration toward giving him a chance to show that he perhaps just didn't bring his "A game" at the clinic I attended here in like March of 1999.

I haven't read many BG quotes lately, but in the past they've always been about how LBSU was good, and if they didn't win it wasn't because they got beat. Any compliment given to the other team was backhanded. It's all about LBSU.
