LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State men’s volleyball team defeated the Pacific Tigers, 3-0 in an MPSF match at The Pyramid Friday night. Game scores were 30-20, 30-19, 30-17.
Long Beach State improved to 5-2 (3-1 MPSF), while Pacific fell to 5-3 (1-2 MPSF).
Yassir Sliti and Robert Tarr paced The Beach with 11 kills each. Teddy Liles poured in eight kills on 10 attempts for .800 attack percentage, while adding four blocks. Duncan Budinger posted nine kills and four blocks. Tyler Hildebrand netted 35 assists, six digs, two blocks, two aces, and four kills, while directing the 49er offense to a .356 attack percentage. Paul Munoz tallied a match-best 10 digs. Brian Zodrow led Pacific with five kills in the losing effort. The Tigers only hit -.022 for the match (24-26-90).
“I thought our serving and passing was really effective tonight,” said head coach Alan Knipe. “Our passing gave us great opportunities to get real points. We are really improving and progressing as a team. We have a lot of new faces from last year’s team. We are getting more and more confident as a group.”<br>
Long Beach State jumped on the Tigers with a 30-20 game one win. Liles posted five kills on five attempts (no errors), while Sliti chipped in with four kills. Long Beach State hit for a .355 clip (16-5-31) and out-dug the Tigers, 14-7. The 49ers unlocked a 7-7 tie with a 9-4 run capped off by a Sliti kill for a 16-11 advantage. LBSU pushed its lead to eight (25-17) after a Pacific ball handling error. Long Beach State closed out Pacific on a 5-3 run for the victory.
The 49ers cruised to a 30-19 game two victory behind four kills from Sliti. Long Beach State continued to hit above .300 (.312) after 15 kills in the frame. The 49ers also out-blocked Pacific 8-3.5. Sliti had four blocks in the set. The 49ers bolted to a 10-5 lead after a Pacific attack error. LBSU increased its lead to 20-11 after a Liles kill, and 25-15 after a Budinger kill.
LBSU closed out the Tigers, 30-17 in the third game.
Long Beach State travels to Pepperdine on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
