I have been giving a lot of thought to requiring registration for everyone who wants to read this forum.
The reason that I am debating this is to encourage participation by those who read the forum by allowing them to post and vote in polls as they are browsing through them.
Please let me know your thoughts and concerns about this as I have not made up my mind yet.
I should add, that although the votes are helpful, they are not the only thing I am going with in making my decision. I'd like some opinions and good points for either situation.

this is a stupid ideaa. how would new people know if they should register or not if they can't read stuff? What you might get is more registrations of people with 0 or 1 posts who registered solely to read the board. then it makes difficult for people to read the membership lists because of all the registered names, most of them not active. stoopid ideaa.

I sometimes log in and sometimes I don't. Even if I do, I VERY seldom participate in polls because they just don't interest me. I think this is back to what Roger proposed quite a while back and it was not popular at all then.
I do enjoy reading several of the posts but doubt I would come nearly as much if I had to log in every time. Also, I may not necessarily want people to know I am logged on.

I don't know about this. I've seen what happens to some forums when they've been restricted to registered users only. I could understand doing so on a pay site with premium info, but not VolleyTalk.
Also - I've linked to VT posts (ones that might be of interest for the casual VB fan) on general sports message boards. Requiring registration would make that difficult.

I was one of those who visited this board (and the 24/7 board) for quite awhile before deciding to register and actively participate. I appreciated the fact that I could find out what kinds of things were being discussed here (things that I could learn from as opposed to simply nonsense; good thing there's none of the latter here!  ) before being required to register. I do not agree that requiring registration would encourage participation. I have been to other forums where registration was required; I simply stopped going there. |

I do not think it should be a requirement to register to read this board. I took several months of reading your threads, posts, etc, etc, ... before I signed up. I wanted to see the quality and the knowledge of the members. This Volleytalk message board is quite the education for me. Some of the posters are very cognizant about the sport and its happenings.

Why fix something that's not broken?
There's a lot of good stuff on the board and it would be a shame not to share. As a couple of posters have mentioned earlier, they decided to register after reading and deciding they want to participate.
I say, leave it as it is.

Sometimes my best posts are when I keep my fingers off the keyboard and say nothing. Being logged on all the time would would make it too easy for me to say stupid things ... change that to MORE stupid things ;D

I agree with that. I like the register to post concept. He's talking register just to read! Forget it. It goes against any marketing basic. Let people "sample" the product and hopefully they'll chime in. That's when you want them to register. Don't hide it where potential participants won't find it (won't be able to read it) and will move on never to come back. |

I vote no. How would anyone even be able to decide whether they wanted to register without reading first. The other item is why do you think we need more posters? Is there something I'm missing? We seem to have quite a few contributers and a lot of them are relatively new and even new this season.

I often do not log on to post/read just because lately it has been more conveinent for me to just go to the posts directly. I actually read the posts almost daily without logging on. Having a requirement to log on to post/read would definitely be a deterrent to me frequenting this site though I do not contribute much to here anyway.
