OUR PASSING IF HORRID......CAN SOMEONE WAKE LOGAN UP?? OUR LIBEROS AREN'T MUCH BETTER In defense of Logan, she passed a VERY high percentage of balls and was all over the place in coverage. For as much responsibility as she shoulders in passing and attacking, her performance tonight was very good. Will she play better in coming matches? I hope so. But tonight was a great all around match for her in my opinion. I do agree we need a better performances from Davis in the future. She didn't prove much tonight and I wouldn't mind seeing Sykora give it a shot against the Cubans.

I like how JLP has molded the outside hitters to substitute for each other seamlessly. The 3rd OH coming off the bench has not only to be ready to substitute for the starting OH not playing well but also to substitute for Opp in both double-sub and 1-1 sub situations.
Good start with the win over Japan but the real test for the OHs (and the various substitution combinations) comes against the othe big teams.

I agree that LT settled down in games 3 and 4....it's a good thing because prior to that she looked hung over.....Bown looks pregnant

I was impressed with team USA's ability to step up and close the match in the end stages of Games 3 and 4. That I must say was smart coaching. Bringing in Berg and Willoughby was huge in turning momentum back to the U.S. Willoughby with an immediate block (point), followed by a kill, and strong serving by Berg (actually surprised Japan). Interestingly, JLP did the same at the end of Game 4, with Ah Mow Santos and Glass effectively closing the game. JLP is a smart coach! I was most impressed by the MIDDLES of course; as well as Willoughby and Haneef Park. Glass didn't make much of an impact, but for some reason or another, was kept in perhaps longer than she should have. Passing needs improvement!!!! But overall, Great JOB USA. The setting was very good, especially considering the poor passing. Yes, the difference in this team compared to last Olympics (aside from veterans getting better), as someone stated earlier, is the addition of both Kyms, particularly Willoughby.

Those watching must be on the east coast. It is on there. West coast comes on around 10:30 AM I missed the match when it was shown out here(west coast, PDT)even though I knew the results...does anyone avoid the Net so you won't get results of a match or other sports and has the Net changed your way of watching the Olympics. Now about the match...we finally defeated Japan in pool play. Didn't we lose to them in '92 and '96 in pool play? What did you think of the team's overall play? Good luck ladies!

I must admit that I was impressed by Bown today. As for the team, they were able to come back from behind in the last two sets with great blocking. I think our defense is still somewhat weak and there were tips that we missed. Our attack needs to improve as welll but blocking was really the key against Japan, who basically choked. I wonder why Nnamani didn't come out to play. Good move by JLP to have Davis as the libero instead of Sykora. Is the libero designated for the entire Olympics?

I think JLP coached her butt off to get this win, given the emotions of the day, the passing meltdown, etc. I hope she 's got more magic up her sleeve. The double sub, the moving people around. I can kind of see the method of her madness in WGP. She put a lot of stress on the team, playing different lineup, trying combinations etc. to get the team prepared to be flexible and not be entrenched into a certain role because it all changes during the Olympics and they have to be ready for anything.

I think JLP coached her butt off to get this win, given the emotions of the day, the passing meltdown, etc. That's a very good point. We don't know how news of what I'm certain is a tragedy for all of USA Volleyball is affecting not just the men but the women as well (as many certainly know and love the Bachman family). In light of this, I think the women played very well against a pesky Japan team that plays great defense and makes few mistakes. Not to give a free pass to the teams or build up emotions too much, but I for one think this kind of tragedy requires the country to get behind our indoor volleyball teams now more than ever.

Congratulations on the win and working through the psychological effects of tragedy.
Now, what frustrates me the most about this team more than anything is that in the YEAR since the World Cup the USA's best and brightest volleyball players still have not learned how to cover a tip. This was a huge deficit during the 2007 WC, and it is still a problem today. Each time it happens they react as if it's a brand new attack technique they didn't just experience three points ago. It's somewhat embarrassing to have an Olympic-level Team give up so many points in one match because we don't cover our blockers. And especially since this was Japan - it's not like we were up against Mari or Ruiz who can rip off the sharp angle 15 times per set. Japan from the left side is either going to run a fast play to exploit an incomplete block, hit high off the block, or tip. Where was the adjustment?

Watched sets 2 and 3 before falling asleep and there were some awesome rallies in the 2 sets alone. Too bad I didn't see the rest of the match.
