That set was like the last set in the movie Sideout. He did like a 180 and threw it all the way cross court. Great win for the US, now lets see if the women can get a gold medal as well. Wouldn't that be crazy if the USA swept every volleyball competition in the Olympics? Knock on wood.

Just watched the replay here in China and despite the fact it came late in the 5th game, that call should have been made. For all the talk of interpretations on double contacts, I've noticed throughout this tournament that referees have been a lot more kind to setters, allowing them to get away with a lot more than the other players on the court. Not exactly sure where this comes from, but from a purely judgmental standpoint, it isn't fair.

They are changing the rules to take judgement calls out of the refs hands. I think you are going to see more plays like that as volleyball continues to evolve. That's "de-volve."

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but they do not let setters get away with mangling balls like that on a consistent basis on the second touch in the international game. You can do whatever you want to the ball on the first touch, but the second contact needs to come out clean and they have been calling double hits throughout the tournament, especially when middles and opposites set the ball when the setter picks up the dig. As far as it being game 5 and deciding the gold medal match that doesn't justify letting a call like that go. It's one thing when something is questionable, it's another when it's a blatantly thrown ball.

Even before the official rule change, I remember twice seeing Rachel Holloway make that set to Sara Pavan and not get called.
