Matos faces lifetime ban after kicking referee following matchsports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/judo/news/story?id=3549903Apparently got disqualified for taking more than a minute to attend to an injury (some sort of "technical knockout" in the rules). He completely lost it and proceeded to kick the ref in the head (notice he's wearing a tie and has no protective gear in the picture). The athlete and his coach were immediately declared to be banned for life. Apparently they face due process, but I'd expect that they'll be banned.

A lifetime ban seems like a light punishment to me. I hope there is repercussions for the Cuban taekwondo program. That sort of reaction is unacceptable under any circumstances.

I agree, he should be charged with assault. (I presume the athletes are not covered by any sort of diplomatic immunity.)

BTW a court ruled that the wrestler who threw his bronze medal and threw a fit has just cause to do so. Supposedly, (I may be wrong here) the judges didn't allow a replay or something, which is something they are supposed to allow. Can anyone clarify?
I totally agree that kicking a ref is completely uncalled for, but was their just cause for the Cuban to be overly pissed?

Most of what I've seen on YouTube is really low quality or has been taken down due to copyright claims. NBC has it though in really high quality. Ref barely saw it coming before he got struck in the face. www.nbcolympics.com/video/share.html?videoid=0823_sd_tkm_au_l1783There's a countdown on the official scoreboard, so it looks like the ref was correct in his ruling. He did get up a couple of seconds after the minute was over though.

I hope there's much legal disciplinary action involved here- this is beyond poor sportsmanship... If the rules are clearly stated, there was no reason for him to go off and physically abuse someone, ESPECIALLY an official. Sad, sad turn of events there...

There was a Puerto Rican player who pushed a referee off the stand. The tournament director called the police to press charges, but the player ran off before the police arrived. That organiztion banned that player from playing in any US events.

I totally agree that kicking a ref is completely uncalled for, but was their just cause for the Cuban to be overly pissed? First off, the wrestler never "threw" his medal. If you watch the tape he just lays it on the mat, waves to the crowd and walks away. Secondly, there is a huge difference between a symbolic gesture such as taking your medal off as means of protest and physically attacking a referee. Lastly, regardless if there was just cause for the Cuban to be upset, physical violence as a last resort is utterly classless and unacceptable under any circumstances.

Yes I agree, and thanks for the correction on the Swede's actions. But, does anyone here understand the sport of Tae kwon do? Just wondering if the Cuban had a reason to be upset. Was it a really unfair call?
